Marching through Georgia

Read Time:2 Minute, 56 Second

by Glenn R. Geist

Listening to Georgia voters chanting Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump with arms raised, with closed fists, was like a punch in the stomach. Frankly Georgia, I don’t give a damn what happens to you – excuse me, all y’all. You’re just stupid people.

Trump isn’t gong to bring you those old time jobs, old time religion, or those old times – or the trade unions that expanded the middle class to include the working class. His growth projections of 3% aren’t really achievable and aren’t really affected much by presidential policy. Most certainly trickle down economics will make us more like Mexico than like 1950’s Great America. Great unless you’re talking about the Red scare and the oppression of minorities, of free speech and the shadow of the Bomb. He isn’t going to bring back segregation or Jim Crow or misogyny laws or any of those  dreams you hide behind your talk of Political Correctness.

The Bull market you’re attributing to Trump began almost 8 years ago and a graph will show you virtually the same upward slope that began a short while after Obama and all his “bailouts.” Our slow population growth, both in births and immigration pretty much preclude that kind of growth and the same obtains to other advanced countries where birth rates and immigration have declined. The same goes for the improved employment figures. Trump hasn’t created and can’t create any new jobs and all his claims to saving jobs are essentially fraudulent. In the end he may not be able to save his own.  Spending a trillion on infrastructure?  Look at his plan and you’ll see it involves little spending but just (you guessed it) more tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations that will stimulate them to build roads. More magic thinking, more money for billionaires.

They’re already building brand new automobile plants, but they employ only a handful of humans. Skilled jobs like painting and machining and welding are all computerized or replaced by other construction techniques. Coal mining has been declining sharply  for at least a hundred years and automation has replaced the guy with the pick and headlamp. Most mining is now above ground and done by heavy equipment operators.  The world is moving away from coal. Natural gas is the current game and even that will inevitably be replaced by new technology – and automation. No president, even a real one is going to change the way mechanical calculators and slide rules are replaced by computers and cell phones are replacing land lines and all the people whose lives were all about assembly lines are going to suffer as they always have from the Industrial Revolution and it’s “surplus population” to the present day. Neither the Royal Nonesuch nor any other president can reverse the clock and undo progress or restore all those lost opportunities for unskilled labor. Skilled labor and  jobs that require education aren’t helped by the refusal to expand education and won’t be helped by Dickensian apprentice programs.

The only funny thing in this tragic development is that people are even more gullible as they complain about the broken promises of past presidents while they mindlessly support more and more fabulous promises and facts be damned. Are all y’all laughing yet? To me the sickening ostinato of Trump. Trump, Trump mimics the tramp, tramp, tramp of black knee boots on the Ku-dam and down the streets of München. Stupid Georgia, stupid America and frankly my dear country, I don’t give a damn.

We’re the good guys. We dropped 26,171 bombs on people last year according to the Tribune news service. We’re the good guys. We spent $500 billion dollars on defense when we’ve never been invaded. Some defense. We’re the good guys. We torture people. We’re the good guys. Oh, never mind. We’re the damn awful stupid red neck neighbor who listens to a rich president with a trailer park mentality. Still better than a lot of places but declining rapidly. Stupid people get what they deserve.
