Why MoveOn.org Should Change Its Name To DreamOn.org.

I recently received an email from MoveOn.org asking me to call one of the people supposedly representing me in Washington. It read, in part:

Dear MoveOn member,

Breaking news: Politico reports that the TrumpCare bill (the latest version of which would take healthcare away from 23 million Americans) will get a vote in the Senate before the end of the month!

It’s outrageous that Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, intends to ram through a vote in the Senate without a real public debate—on a new bill that hasn’t even been written yet.

We must stop this from happening, and we can: by making sure every Republican knows that we’re watching, we’re outraged, and we’ll exact a political price if they rush this bill through.

Can you pick up the phone and call Sen. Johnson right now and tell him that you oppose TrumpCare?

Here’s where to call: Sen. Johnson – (202) 224-5323

When you call, be sure to say that you’re a constituent and are opposed to any plan that takes coverage away from tens of millions of Americans, threatens Medicaid, reduces the quality of care, or reduces protections for pre-existing conditions. If you have your own health care story, be sure to share it!

I have two open letter responses to this. The first is to MoveOn.org:

Really? Do you think that Johnson is going to pay any attention to the phone calls he will get from your supporters? If you do, I have a nice parcel of land in Florida for you. Remember, this is a guy who testified before the Wisconsin State Senate on behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay against a bill eliminating the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse and extending the deadline for lawsuits by three years. His position was that “…an employer should not be held responsible for the actions of its employees.”

Do you expect compassion or empathy from a man who would say something like that? Depriving people of health care is the sort of thing that warms his cockles.

He just got re-elected. Barring something unusual, he’s sitting pretty until 2022, so he doesn’t have to pick up his phone for at least five years. If you expect any kind of results from this effort, I think it’s time you considered changing the name of your group from MoveOn.org to DreamOn.org.

The second is to Senator Johnson in lieu of a phone call:

Hey, Senator – MoveOn.org wanted me to get in touch with you to tell you that I oppose TrumpCare. Well, I do oppose it, but I know full well that you’ve got your seat for another six years and your check from the Koch brothers so you don’t have to pay attention to your constituents for quite a while – not that you’d be able to hear what anyone has to say with your head so far up Trump’s rectum. I don’t have to bother calling Senator Baldwin, because I know she’ll do the right thing where you wouldn’t know the right thing if it reared up and bit off your nose. You are not my senator. I voted for Feingold both times, and if someone had come up behind me at the voting booth and said, “Vote for Johnson or die”, I’d have seriously considered saying “Pull the trigger”. I look forward to living long enough to see you leave office, and if it happens before your term is officially over, so much the better.

Sincerely, E.A. Blair
