Major Hurricane Maria Expected to Strengthen, Strike Puerto Rico, Leewards

According to the National Hurricane Center Maria is now a dangerous ‘major’ hurricane. The Category 3 storm will most certainly strike the Leeward Islands on the edge of the Caribbean Sea on Monday night, forecasters say, threatening areas that are still coping with the devastation brought by Hurricane Irma two weeks ago. Unfortunately, predictions also call for it to pass straight over Puerto Rico on Wednesday. Some forecasters are predicting a strengthening to a Category 4 storm prior to landfall in San Juan.
“Significant strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves through the Leeward Islands,” the National Hurricane Center says.
At present Maria is not predicted to strike Florida, however, accurate forecasting is very difficult this far out, and the track is expected to change, based on existing weather patterns which may influence the path of the storm.
If there’s any good news Maria doesn’t have the historic size and strength of Irma, and its hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles — far short of the 70 miles such winds extended from Irma’s center. But the hurricane’s storm surge and heavy rains could post grave threats, from triggering mudslides to frustrating relief and recovery efforts in places where thousands of buildings were heavily damaged by Irma.
