Mississippi School Pulls Lesbian Photo from Yearbook

Read Time:48 Second

A Mississippi high school student’s photo has been scrubbed from her senior yearbook. Ceara Sturgis’ crime? The lesbian teen sported a tuxedo in her picture. “They didn’t even put her name in it,” Sturgis’ mother, Veronica Rodriguez, tells the Jackson Free Press. “They’ve got kids in the book that have been busted for drugs.” Rodriguez is angry, but perhaps not entirely surprised: she enlisted the ACLU in October after learning that the school decided to ban the photo from the book because Sturgis wasn’t wearing a dress. The organization wrote a letter demanding it be included; Rodriguez had at least expected them to list her daughter on the senior page and acknowledge her academic achievements. “It’s like she’s nobody there.” The school says it has consulted its lawyers, and that its “position is not arbitrary, capricious, or unlawful, but is based upon sound educational policy and legal precedent.” The ACLU hasn’t said if it plans to take legal action.

Hey, if you all want lesbians to be treated like regular people, don’t come crying to me when all us heteros are rounded up and put in lesbian reeducation camps and have the choice of the homosexual agenda or a firing squad.

I’d like to see MORE lesbian photos – not just in yearbooks, but everywhere!!

I’m betting that there are other Gays and Lesbians in that Year Book, but they are firmly in the closet out of fear. Years down the road, they may have to scrub more names from it, when they finally come out.

What a tragic abuse of power by the school board in Copiah County. According to the original article (linked in Mike’s story above) Ceara has great support among her fellow students who even went so far as to nominate her for Prom Queen. She is also one of the top academic students in the school.

As is often the case, the youth are our hope for the future. Let’s hope they don’t grow up to be like their prejudiced and fearful parents.

Mississippi does seem to have a problem with lesbians. They’ve just been through that huge altercation over Constance McMillen in Itawamba county, which may not be over yet.

The Mississippi ACLU certainly gets plenty of work to do.

The spirit of George Wallace in the schoolhouse door is alive and well down there.

It’s outrageous. Another time to remember the rate of teen suicide among gay / lesbian kids. GAD! Is it that Republicans have gotten away with so much intolerance in the last year or am I blowing that out of proportion? Probably am blowing it up. Hope I am.

I think intolerance by Repukes has grown in all areas. I also think that especially in the case of GLBT rights, most of the rest of the population is growing more tolerant, not less.

Unfortunately the “normal majority” is not who usually wins elections in the South. Repukes have also been picking targets easier to bully and harass- school children, like Constance McMillen and Chelsea. I think it is their powerlessness as kids (and girls) that attracts this treatment. Naturally the bulliers will try to justify their ill behavior by claiming the moral high ground -protecting other students from the “gayness”.

Kindness seems to slipping away from America lately…

I guess the Deep South (I include Texas) is into rewriting history. They must think that if Ceara doesn’t appear anywhere in the yearbook then her memory will be erased- like she never went to the school at all.

Most HS yearbooks are put together by a student staff, then approved by one teacher. Think someone could have had an axe to grind?
