Pregnant Siberian Tiger Drowns in Zoo

The drowning death of a Siberian tiger at a British zoo has puzzled zookeepers and dealt a serious blow to the breeding program for the rare species. Malyshka, a 5-year-old tigress who was mother to two cubs and was pregnant with more, was found drowned in a natural pool in her enclosure in the Norfolk zoo. She often played in the pool, and experts suspect she may have suffered a seizure.

Malyshka’s mate isn’t a suspect in her death, said the zoo director. “He is a gentleman in the tiger world and would often be seen playing with and caring for the two youngsters, so he is not implicated,” he told the BBC. Malyshka was ranked among the top five breeding females in Europe’s Siberian tiger breeding program. The death has led to renewed calls for shutting down zoos.

This is tragic. I don’t feel so well now… I’ll watch too much tv to try and forget … but I won’t and I shouldn’t … tragic.

A sad loss. I suppose one could argue that there should not have been a pool in the enclosure, but of course if keepers tried to eliminate every imaginable danger, their animals’ lives would become so dull and constrained as to be hardly worth living.

It’s hard to see how “shutting down zoos” would do any good, if the species is endangered in its natural habitat.

As a cat lover, of all sizes, I hate to see these magnificent creatures in Zoos, but realize that we have to keep their species alive, the world would be poorer place without them.

Tigers are one of the few cats who like to swim. It was no doubt a fluke that she drowned because of a seizure. Removing the pool isn’t the answer- nor would be isolating her from her mate. I am going to grope my tiger tabby now to make me feel better. πŸ™

A shame that a lot of these endangered species’ natural habitats fall in places where the government can’t or won’t crack down as much as necessary. Fucking humans.

If you tell anyone I just cried I will sue you.

I was feeling so happy until I read this.

Still…at least we’re trying…or some of humanity are trying…to keep these magnificent beasts alive.

That’s the bit that suggests there is hope for us.

…Right…Dry yer eyes mate….RIP you beautiful girl.
