If Catastrophe Strikes – Would You Be Prepared
Would you be ready if disaster strikes? All across the country there is a growing army of self-sufficient men and women out there who make it their goal to be prepared when disaster strikes. They call themselves “preppers.”
From natural catastrophes to economic meltdowns to nuclear blowouts, the preppers’ collective goal is quite simple: to carry on as usual, even when catastrophe strikes. Think backyard fallout shelters of the 1950s or Y2K meltdown — only 2010 style.
The “preppers”—survivalists hoarding supplies and learning essential skills in anticipation of a disastrous event—may have seemed like a fringe movement at first, but they’re growing. Don’t believe it? Just take a look at the numerous blogs, podcasts, and websites that teach everything from what supplies to stockpile to how to build a bomb shelter. Costco even sells a 1-year supply of freeze-dried food, for $999.99.
As with any group, the prepper clan is made up a variety of mindsets. While some opt to stock up on pre-packaged products, others, like Martin, invest their time and money other ways.
“I spend more time learning skills, tips and ideas than I do money on equipment,” he tells Asylum Magazine. “Survival is an instinct; preparedness is not. Preparedness has to be learned.”
“In my opinion, it is more about taking personal responsibility for yourself and your family and being more self-reliant and less dependent on outside sources in an emergency.”
Preppers get off on learning life skills, storing away massive amounts of long-lasting food, guns and ammunition and talking about the end of the world as we know it.
Are you ready for when society falls apart? Or do the people who call themselves preppers think it already has?

Here is a guy that started a “luxury bunker” in the Mojave desert.
“Robert Vicino, who runs the Del Mar-based company Vivos, has already taken reservations for the bunker in Barstow. He says the 13,000-square-foot area will include an atrium, gym and jail on the inside and sloppy joes and pearl potatoes on the menu.”

Although the title that CBS gave the story is a misnomer. There is no such thing as a “nuke-proof” bunker. NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain isn’t even “nuke-proof” and it is beneath a granite mountain.

It might be time to switch to freeze dried food….
No kidding. That is a good idea, Tao.
Oh please. Your eating habits are too spoiled to allow for even an unshaved weekend of MRE eating.

I would be screwed.
Krell and I used to joke that we’d be great in a survival situation, just due to knowledge, not preparation. I know I would stockpile aspirin at least.
Of course this shark suit I’ve been saving would only be good in the event of a zombpocalypse.
