America-Land of the Free-Home of the Dumb
On July 4th, Americans from all walks of life will gather to celebrate their independence from … someone or other. According to a new poll, more than 1 in 4 Americans can’t name England as the country the colonists fought in the Revolutionary War, CNN reports.
That figure includes 20% who said they didn’t know and 6% who just plain got it wrong—answers included France, China, Japan, and Mexico, among others. The numbers were especially bad among young people—the question stumped a whopping 40% of 18-to-29-year-olds. Women too had trouble, with only 67% answering the question correctly, compared to 81% of men.

This is a tangent- kind of. We were at Disney World in Florida a couple years back. Specifically the store in Epcot that sold the Beatles Yellow Submarine cookie cutter I had been wanting.
The kids had a little mask thing they had been carting from country to country, getting it stamped and adding a colored cut-out from each (hey it was free- not much else is free there!)
They waited in line forever, and were ready to give up, but I told them to keep a stiff upper lip, “Guys, you can’t quit now! The cut-out for Great Britain is a DRAGON! How cool is that?”
Then the young British (student on a VISA) clerk came round the counter and gave the kids and me glittery Mickey stickers and praised us for “getting the name of the country right”.
“What? How can people get it wrong? What are they calling it?”
“England, mostly.”
I bet most Americans don’t even know where Wales is.
The American patriots fought the British for their independence.
I will refrain from commenting here as I am an Englishman and I am already fully aware that many Americans – much as I may love them – are woefully dumb.
AND YES!!! Before you start…so are many many many English people…
Well…we are apt to follow the USA in all things so having an inordinately dumb and stupid population is just part and parcel of becoming the fifty something state eh?…;-)
Oops…just commented…soz…daft as a brush me…
Just a technicality, but those who answered England got it wrong too.
The UK? Great Britain? Who is it then?
