Italy denies Islam religious status

Read Time:40 Second

Mosques in Italy will not receive a share of income tax revenue the Italian government allocates to religious faiths each year. Hindu and Buddhist temples, Greek Orthodox churches and Jehovah’s Witnesses will be eligible for the funds, according to a bill approved by the Italian cabinet in May and still must be approved by parliament.

Reason? Radical imams, polygamy and failure to uphold women’s rights by Muslims immigrants are obstacles to recognizing Islam as an official religion in Italy.

Until now, the government had earmarked 8 percent of income tax revenue for Italy’s established churches. The great majority of these funds go to the Catholic Church, although if they wish, individual tax payers may elect to give the money to charities and cultural projects instead.

There 130 mosques in Italy, serving 1.5 million Muslims.

True. They are all indeed political but are any of them currently ‘dangerous’ to the west? Possibly, but I doubt as dangerous as Islam is right now…

and NO I’m not Islamophobic. If I was Mo Noor would punch me instead of buying me a beer. So there!…;-)

I think they are reacting to the political nature of Islam which is increasingly the objectionable part of it. I have no problems with people who want to pray 5x/day, fast and abstain for a month, wash themselves a lot and not eat certain things. But inflicting their medieval rules on women and using their own penal code (stoning, beating, murdering) selectively against women smacks of politics not religion.

Jews have dietary laws, and Catholics face excommunication for certain things, but neither of them actually has something prescribing the death for people who don’t follow, as “Shari’a law” does.

I completely agree that tax exempt statues, or handouts should go to no religion.

MH- that’s only recently… that they do not have death sentences to pass out… especially to women.

They are ALL political. Some are more subtle. And less subtle. I can’t help but think it’s wrong to repress anyone’s spiritual expression… no matter how de-volving it is.

But I agree that they should all be taxed! hell ya.

…careful Dinners…careful…

Not being an expert on Italy I would merely ask, are the other religions attempting to blend in a wee bit?…you know…the courtesy of living in another country so let’s be a wee bit respectful sort of thing?

No idea but I would guess they probably are – at least sufficiently not to upset everyone else.

I could be radically wrong of course. Italy may just be the home of radical anti-Islamists I suppose.

Doesn’t seem likely to me somehow…but who knows?
