What does 600 mean?

Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th home run today and the press is falling over themselves to proclaim how much they and rest of America’s baseball fans don’t care. They say how special this moment could have been if only he had never taken steriods. There have been only seven players in the history of the game to reach this milestone. The last “clean” player to do it was Ken Griffey Jr. a couple of years ago. The question I have to ask is where was the fanfare when he reached the milestone? Does anybody or specifically any baseball fan remember where they were when he hit it? Do you remember what park he hit it in? Do you remember the press making a huge deal about it? I certainly don’t remember any of it and I’m an extremely rabid baseball fan.

People talk about Babe Ruth and his records and how they are now being tainted by players who used artificial means to reach them. Those people never mention the fact that Babe Ruth and all the players before Jackie Robinson never had to face any player of color. I have no doubt that Babe’s numbers would still have been outstanding (as would Roger Clemens’, Barry Bonds’, Mark McGwire’s, Alex Rodriguez’s, Manny Ramirez’s, etc. without steroids) if he had to face the best players in the negro league on a regular basis. However, he clearly had multiple advantages (no night games, no west coast travel, limited use of relief specialists, etc.) that today’s players do not have. How many home runs would Arod hit if he didn’t have to face any minority players? The answer is zero, of course, because he wouldn’t be allowed to play in the major leagues.

Should anyone be excited about Arod hitting this home run? It probably only means something to some Yankee fans and to the few Arod fans around the country. And I think that’s enough. There’s no reason to think that America was going to be gripped by his chase for this number. And they should really stop with the steroids stuff. It’s a ridiculous argument. Cheaters have existed in baseball since its inception and they will continue to exist. There are any number of adulterers, wife beaters, drug addicts, gamblers, felons, etc. who currently reside in the hall of fame. Let’s keep some perspective here.

Your going to hate my guts on this one. I hate baseball!
I tell you why. When I was a kid growing up,I loved the game. As a matter of fact I excelled at playing it. That was 40 years ago. When baseball started out everyone could enjoy it because everyone could afford it. Even Poor people could scrap up a few bucks now and then and go see a game. Father’s took pride in taking kids to their first baseball game. Not so much anymore.
No one in my circle of friends can afford a baseball game today.
For us to go and see a yankee game, we would have to spend at least $500.00 for two of us. That don’t include travel. I guess we could skip rent. Save up you say, I’d rather save up for grocery treats or catch up on the power bill. Baseball has gotten away from being Americas game. Today you would have to say Rich Americans game. So, they don’t want me and mine, thus they can kiss my ass. Oh and even TV, you have to pay extra for the Yankee channel. Nope not us.

I watched baseball several times on TV. The best I did was 20 minutes before I nodded off. I’ll carry on watching the grass grow I think…;-)
