What If They All Had Guns?

HARTFORD, Conn. (Aug. 5) — A black man who went on a shooting rampage at a beer distributor calmly told a 911 operator that it was “a racist place” and that he “handled the problem” but wished he had shot more people.
Omar Thornton called 911 after shooting 10 co-workers – eight fatally – on Tuesday morning at Hartford Distributors Inc. He introduced himself as “the shooter over in Manchester” and said he was hiding in the building, but he would not say where.
“You probably want to know the reason why I shot this place up,” he said, his voice steady. “This place is a racist place. They’re treating me bad over here. And treat all other black employees bad over here, too. So I took it to my own hands and handled the problem. I wish I could have got more of the people.”

Ok, I’ll ask the question that all Republicans want to ask…What if all the employees had guns? What if the gunman was confronted with an office full of armed co-workers, would this still have happened? I fully understand the question and why the Republicans think this would be the end-all answer to everything including this incident. I think there are some situations where armed victims would have been better off, but I think if that law was in place and everyone had guns, the sicko murderer would have simply run in there with Grenades, or a rocket launcher and thereby kill a lot more people, so I think there could have been a lot more victims and fatalities if they were all armed.
I remind you of other shootings past and even the School and Mall shootings of the past…remember Columbine? Usually, the shooters are not idiots even though they are mentally twisted, they would have known the threat and would simply have escalated their attacks with better planning and using weapons with a larger kill and destruction size, mainly Grenades, RPG’s and such. I still think that right now, it is better to not have everyone armed to the teeth. Let the Wild West remain a thing of the past, and ignore these Wild West wannabes who are trying to bring the Old Wild West era back.

In 1992 I got robbed at the AMT after I closed my shop, making the deposit. I didn’t do it again. I feel fortunate that only money was taken, I was unharmed. Then I got mugged locking up after work. For the money I carried … I wasn’t harmed badly, but I was shook. I got a 38 snub nose with special grips and I learned to shoot it with some skill. I carried it with me for a couple of months. Then I had a little one in the car with me one afternoon and all I think about was that gun in my leather case for books. I gave it to my room mate, she was happy to get it… half Cherokee, she was unafraid and used to arms. I never thought of it again. I know how to use blades better. I fenced in school, I did very well at that. When I dream I am using a weapon, it’s always a blade.
But Tee… like you, I don’t want to use a weapon, I don’t want the wild west back and I long for a more tolerant world. I wonder of all my blog buddies in NYC right now and the situation at ground zero. The intolerance. The haters. Your piece was great… I stopped to think it over and I’m better for it. More clear in my mind … while I’ve always thought this way, generally, I think we all need to sometimes take a moment and reassess ourselves … from time to time. TY Tee, for providing that. No violence. No guns. No shit.

Seriously, I’d like a 38. Since I can no longer physically defend myself and family, it has it’s appeal. I can’t shoot a shotgun, cause most of my bones would shatter. Then me ankles would be really big. Of course the perp would either run in horror or laugh himself to death. Damn I can’t win.;)
How accessible are RPG’s and hand grenades? I’m guessing not quite as easily obtainable as hand guns or even assault rifles. I’m not fully schooled in these sorts of things, I’ll admit, but it seems to me that this argument against everyone having guns is a bit far-fetched. The criminals have guns whether they are legal or not. That is a fact. Why shouldn’t I be able to protect what’s mine? I’m not asking to be allowed a full assault cache but simple home protection. Well, something besides the cameras and Rottweiler 😉
What sort of hell would we be living in if everyone you knew and strangers on the street were armed to the teeth. We would be a third world country in a heartbeat. Cops would shoot on sight for the slightest infraction, they would have to, for their own survival. All the tribesmen in Afghanistan seem to be armed with combat weapons, that tells you something.
Curiously, the outcome that you predict has failed to occur in any locale where the carrying of concealed deadly weapons by civilians is permitted.
