Bullied teen steps in front of truck to end torment

Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

Stories such as these break my heart.  The fact is America is wrapped up in it’s job, or lack thereof; housing shortages, foreclosures, and etc, and has lost interest in the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq while forgetting the wars that go on in the minds of our children.  Won’t someone help our babies?  Read this story and tell me what you think:

A 14-year-old boy stepped in front of a tractor-trailer in central Pennsylvania last week, and became the latest victim of school bullying to turn to suicide, the Patriot-News reports. Brandon Bitner, who had a close group of friends and a passion for the violin, wrote in his suicide note that he felt unable to stop the torment he faced for three years at school. Brandon’s fate, along with others including Tyler Clementi, have prompted a wave of support from local and national anti-bullying groups like the It Gets Better Project.

“People have to know that this can happen to anyone, even people you don’t suspect,” says Bitner’s cousin. Aside from an incident just prior to Bitner’s death, his difficulties were rarely reported to the school’s principal, but “the fact they don’t report it doesn’t let us off the hook. We need to reach out to kids,” he said.

You guys that are members of Facebook, Myspace and any social networking sites can help get this message out. Oh and about the 55 second mark see who is talking. I wish she could convince her husband about this. It’s from the No on H8 campaign.

There have been so many stories lately like this one kids it is disheartening to me. I know Dan Savage started that It gets better project and some big names have added their voices to it. I think I made a comment about this project a few weeks ago. Kids need to have someone they can go talk to in their lives, because suicide should not be an option for anyone especially a child.
There was a minister/pastor just came out last week or week before, because he had heard one too many stories of a child being bullied, or having killed themselves because of their sexuality and or percieved sexuality, and thought he could help. I think it starts with us adults not being bullies ourselves. That is just my opinion though and I know it isn’t shared by everyone. Seems we are a more divided place and if kids see us bullying each other they take that as an okay to do it themselves. Parents also have a responsibility in their kids behavior. That means the bullied child has to have someone in his/her life to fight in their corner against the bullies, talking to the parent of the bully/ies. Here is a good site if you want to get some more information on how you can help.

Everyone is talking politics and no one is talking of the death of our children. When is the last time you heard anyone talk about Afghanistan or Iraq? What about our kids?

I don’t want to read made up stories and I don’t want to read the exhausting egos of those who only want to exploit this wonderful site.

So, that being said, why are there so few comments on this post? This is important, unless of course we are all just thinking about ourselves. At the least I would have thought Mother Hen, Krell and the lawyer, would have responded to this. What a shame.

Peter I think there are stories that just break the heart and it may be hard for some people to discuss. For me this is one of them, I can’t wrap my head around how suicide would be the choice for kids as young as these, with their whole lives in front of them.

Kids can be so cruel to other kids, name calling and physical threats strike deep into young hearts.
