Of Patriots and Profiteers

A letter to the “Modern Patriot”..
What is a Patriot? The standard definition may be something like…”A person who has a love for his country”
Maybe it might be extended in definition to a person that has love for his country and its inhabitants.
I like that one…a person that has love for his country and it’s inhabitants.
You see, I happen to think that being a Patriot should be a natural thing. A good thing.
But the one thing that gets me really pissed off is hearing how you have made it into a distorted, mutated, shell of it’s former self.
Please someone tell me…how in the hell can someone call himself a Patriot if they destroy the very thing that makes America?
How can someone be a “Patriot” if they are taking off the top of a mountain for its coal? Or looking at ways to continue to dump pollutants in the air or rivers?
How can that next generation learn to love America if it is being scooped up and sold, shovel by shovel or destroyed because you cut corners and dumped millions of gallons of oil?
How in the HELL can someone call themselves a Patriot when they are putting people out of work to make more money?
Can that possibly be showing love towards your fellow Americans when you ship your jobs overseas so you can pay someone 17 cents per day for labor while giving yourself million dollar bonuses?
And when you get past America’s hard fought laws requiring environmental protections and a safe work environment in these new found sources of cheap labor, are you being a Patriot?
How can you possibly say that you give a shit about this country when you do that?
When you find a new financial maneuver to manipulate huge amounts of the American’s hard earned life savings and dreams of owning a piece of this American dream, are you being a Patriot?
You see in your mind somehow you have perverted the meaning.
Somehow…the meaning of Patriot has been blurred with Profiteer.
Oh, it’s nothing new. People like yourselves have been around since this country was founded.
Quickly finding a niche, a circumstance, where you can get the advantage and make large sums of cash. And heaven help the people that get in your way.
But then again, they were called what they were…Shyster, Shill, CarpetBagger, ScowBanker, Death Merchant, Robber Baron.
You were around when things like leaded gas were continued to be sold, 18 years after proof of harm to the development of children.
You were around when you had your own women employees continued to work with radium, even though you knew it was rotting their face away.
Lots of example…could go on and on.
But let me tell you, they were never called Patriots. No sir, never Patriots.
Even then, people understood when someone didn’t have their country or their citizens best interest in mind.
Oh, but you are smart and you spend your money well. The best of media. The best of lobbyists and the best of politicians.
You may have parts of the country’s population fooled.
But they don’t realize that liberty to you means freedom to export to the lowest common denominator.
They don’t realize that your definition of liberty means being able to pay minimum wage or less….or kicking people out of their homes without due process… or paying zero corporate taxes because your company is registered in the Islands…. or gambling with other people’s money under fraudulent conditions and Ponzi Schemes.
That your definition of patriotism means love for the 1/2 of one percent of your fellow cronies and not the other 99 per cent…or screwing everybody in every possible profitable way.
Sure you can try to silence any voice of dissension or terminate the employment of anybody exposing your methods. Try to hound into submission anybody that voices an opinion different. Even make corporations into “Citizens”..
But it’s only going to happen for so long, only for just so long.
History shows that these situations tend to equalize out in the long run.
So enjoy it while you can, Fuckers, enjoy it while you can…

Re-reading this… and thinking Krell, how in it’s simple honesty, such an elegant piece. Nearly everyone / or organization I’ve ever encountered that condemns is mired in FEAR. Profiteers are corrupting the idealism and true awareness/establishment or demonstration of community using this tool of FEAR…it’s as ancient a gambit as politics itself. Us and our breed…clan, kin, are good, decent & honest people who care for not just ourselves alone, but the whole and we are made combatants who must slog through a “catch 22″… a personal inner crisis / paradox of using the system that sustains the Fear and profiteering: the Gonzo thesis of “fear and loathing”.
The positive contributors to the conversation here and everywhere do our best to transmute the fear and loathing attached to our own simple profits… and put them to work making positive changes through our needs for living and sustanence in a corrupt mechanism – global economy. It may only be an intention … but the Russians measured the ‘energy’ of thoughts with machines in the 70’s and we know that thoughts have great power (anyway)… and in helping each other out… investing our small measures in what is by our own defining, good and right in a world that seems to be changing rapidly now… right before our eyes.

….. I just got a phone call asking me to contact my congressmen to not support the bill for upcoming action to decrease my SS benefits. I am already considered at poverty level, no telling how low this will throw me …. BUT …. my question of the day is … why don’t those congressmen and senators bring up a bill to lower their outrageous annual pay checks … probably save us millions compared to my $1.98

Thanks, Tee. Sometimes rants can be quite cathartic. Also the same results can be had by a good steak and a very tall beer.
Hopefully the lame duck session will get to working on MTR before the pubbies screw it up. There is a bill currently in the house, forget the number, dealing with MTR and regulation ans stopping it. I’ll get the number and post the bill when I am more awake.
As for the profiteers, you need look no further than our very own US Cahmber of Commerce. They have taken their shit international now, getting monies from foreign countries, bringing it back here donating to those who will send our jobs overseas.
Didn’t the Republicans scream bloody murder because some lobbyist from Hong Kong that was giving contributions to the Clintons?
The true sign of a scoundrel, whether they be politician; TV pundit or corporate power monger, is when they wrap themselves in the flag. It borders on nationalism and preys on a weak spot in people’s psyche. Patriotism it isn’t.

Wrapping oneself around the flag isn’t a new thing by any stretch, but I don’t think that it has ever been so polished and machine like in its execution.

It’s getting to be a real dog eat dog out there. But I’m sure you’ve seen that as well, Gwen, with your volunteer work.
Krell, this one is a keeper. It should be mandatory reading in school. Reminds me of that jerk, Hannity. His supporters are great Americans as if he knew what the hell that meant.
Thanks, Tim. Hannity is one in particular that uses and abuses the term. Another is the one with the initials of Rush Limbaugh.
Well said Krell. Without shame these profiteering bastards can proclaim their greatness and they have a lot of clout with the media and therefore with people across the country.
But if you and others continue to pound on how truly wrong and perverted and corrupt they are,and people see that some of that wrongness and perversion and corruption in themselves and they renounce it, we will make a difference.
Oso, I guess that really is the only solution that can be offered in this rant I gave. I certainly didn’t offer up one.
But maybe, just maybe, people will get tired of being exploited and used. I just hope that there is a chance to reverse the damages before it is too late. People tend to forget the hardships but Mother Earth may not be so forgiving.
