What I have always noticed about conservatives is that they love to paint themselves as the prosecuted underdog, always under attack by the Godless many. This moth eaten outrage about the de-Christing of Christmas is one of their favorite things to nail themselves to the cross over.
…and that cross has a lot of nail holes in it.
Call me ignorant, but I’ll always be convinced that the reason behind any outrage is that deep down these people have a small part of them that thinks that it actually could be just a myth. If you were really that sure about it, someone saying it isn’t true wouldn’t really affect you at all. That little bit of doubt is what raises the anger levels because if they’re right then that means you’re wrong and you’ve been living a lie.
Sonofarex,
That’s not ignorant at all,it’s a very valid observation. I’d never thought of it before but it does make sense.
Very good point Sonofarex.
That’s really odd. I have thought of Christmas as a religious holiday in many years. To me it has come to represent time off work and having to cough up money for gifts. I guess that makes me the Grinch. I know it can’t be about the birth of Jesus because he supposedly was born around February or March. But then again, I haven’t been religious in years any way.
You not religious? I just can’t believe it 🙂
What annoys the hell out of me about this, is why isn’t that Christian guy angry about the wars on Iraq or Afghanistan instead of an imagined war on Christmas?
A true Christian would be angry about suffering and injustice, not a billboard.
I couldn’t agree more Oso.
I wouldn’t characterize it as religion and reason. What I have always done is try to cultivate a sense of mystery without abandoning reason. Though I am not an atheist, my method has estranged me from religion, yet allows me to be critical of the limits of reason. Good video.
Religion and reason…yep..that’s a winner..;-)
the catholic league has put up a competing billboard that says “You know it’s real.” to which I say: Oh? Where’s the evidence?
I love the winter solstice yule log season, but it’s much easier to say Christmas or Festivus.
Calling the bible a myth is not opinion. It is a fact that the stories are christian mythology.
Those christians are always angry about something. I used to be one and I remember that I was always angry about something.
