WikiLeaks Servers relocated to Swedish Nuclear Bunker

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

The Wikileaks controversy continues to rage as Amazon backs out and Sweden jumps in.  Here is the story from MMA’s favorite engineer:

After the Afghanistan controversy, the WikiLeaks servers were relocated to a specially designed Cold War bunker in Sweden. In fact, the facility still has the code name from its military days: Pionen White Mountains.

Located in central Stockholm, the facility has 1110 sqm (11950 sq ft) of space and is located below 30 meters of solid bedrock (granite) right inside the city.

Like most things designed by the Swedes, it is over designed. It’s one of the few bunkers designed to be able to withstand a near hit by a hydrogen bomb, (Megaton blast capacity).

Doors to the main entrance are 16 inch thick 40 ton hardened steel.

German submarine engines for backup power: Backup power is handled by two Maybach MTU diesel engines producing 1.5 Megawatt of power. The engines were originally designed for submarines, and just for fun the people at Pionen have also installed the warning system (sound horns) from the original German submarine.

Cooling is handled by Baltimore Aircoil fans producing a cooling effect of 1.5 megawatt, enough for several hundred rack-mounted units.

The network has full triple redundancy with both fiber optics and extra copper lines with three different physical ways into the mountain. Pionen is one the best-connected places in northern Europe.

Work environment with simulated daylight and greenhouses: For a pleasant working environment the data center has simulated daylight, greenhouses, waterfalls and a huge 2600-liter salt water fish tank.

Krell makes it sound and look much like the CERN site… I begin to think of Wikileaks transmissions as the godparticles of global information. They are certainly acting like political antimatter…..
I really loved the post. 🙂

Funny, I did this post way back when Iraq and Wiki was hot on the news. MMA reposted it and it still seems to be relevant.

That is an interesting Gwen….the particles by themselves are nothing but in certain sequences for information that if far greater.

Believe it or not, that concept was the basis of Information Theory brought out by Claude Shannon in 1948…probably rambling on here a bit but to me, it’s interesting stuff…

P.S. Did you check out the 360 panoramic view link? Really cool!

Think of the site shown on this post as the center core, where the original starts and information is processed. Sort of where the stories are processed, original information is stored, the central command.

Now think of mirrored sites for specific tasks like cablegate.wikileaks.org Those mirrored sites can be anywhere in the world.

They are like newspaper stands that distribute the news.

When the original site for cablegate.wikileaks was attacked by something called a distributed denial of service attack OR DDOS, that is attacking the “newspaper stand”. So what they did is reposition where the newspaper stand is located. In this case, rented Amazon server space.

It really is stupid to think that causing Amazon to refuse to rent server space will stop the leaks. They just have to use another one of their server spaces, a different corner to locate the newspaper stand.

They have numerous mirrored server sites all over the world.

Whatever your opinion of the guy is, he is at the top of the technical food chain. And he has plenty of technical prowess backing him up with volunteers equally as savvy.

I wonder if a Bunker Buster 2,000 lb bomb would would seal them in there? America is a Second Rate Power now like Russia. China Rules!

Whole thing could be brought down by a tech like me signing off all the power and backup routines for a couple years.

Ulrika Johnson is Swedish. If America had the faintest idea who Ulrika Johnson is, this would be a worry…;-)

Speaking of Afghanistan…I was given some Afghan money today by a driving student who served out there in the British Army. Apparently it was some of the last printed before they went over to the dollar.

I will frame it – or possibly invest it?…;-)

They may be untouchable, but I suspect that governments probably have ways of stopping it if it came down to an emergency.

It comes down to just how bad do they want to do it and how much publicity are they willing to endure over it.

Sweden and most other members of the EU place strong emphasis on privacy. I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more clashes with our draconian DRM enforcements and the EU.

That panoramic 360 view that you can control IS something. Somebody spent some time on that one.

That panoramic 360 is something. We might get some serious leaks out of these guys now, they are practically untouchable. They must have some high up OKs from the Swedish government.
