January 1, 2011, Dilma Rousseff was sworn in as President of Brazil. A life long civil servant, she had never held, or even ran for elected office until last year’s presidential election. Ms Rousseff was appointed energy minister in President Lula’s government in 2003 and served as his chief of staff from 2005 to 2010. She was elected in October, defeating the opposition candidate Jose Serra by 56% to 44% in a run-off vote.

One of the major challenges she faces is the fact that she is not Mr Lula, a man of the people and a consummate politician.

Ms Rousseff has a somewhat brusque manner and is reputed to have a short temper – attributes that have, perhaps unsurprisingly, led to her being dubbed the Iron Lady. Dilma Rousseff was born in 1947 and grew up in an upper middle class household in Belo Horizonte. Her father, Pedro Rousseff, was a Bulgarian immigrant.

Her seemingly conventional background changed in the mid-1960s, when she was in her late teens. She became involved in left-wing politics and joined the underground resistance to the military dictatorship that seized power in 1964.

She has said that she was never actively involved in armed operations, but in 1970 she was jailed for three years and tortured.

She is the first female president of the Latin American economic powerhouse and with all the glass ceilings she is crashing through, she could get an offer to quarterback the Philadelphia Eagles sometime soon.

A friend of mine is a micro-biologist originally from Brazil, and he’s brilliant. Their educational system produced him – I’d say they already are a world player.

The story of Brazil’s economy is another wonder. It went from literally being completely bankrupt to being a powerhouse. Amazing!

Wonderful news,Holte.South American may yet be free from the US boot on their collective neck.

Story goes like this – A freely held election puts in office a leader who uses the countries resources to provide free education and healthcare to the poor, cutting into the profits of US multinationals. Our national security services condemn the elected leader as a communist, our compliant media echoes it, and our stupid public buys the story.

The CIA and USAID funnel $ in to disrupt the economy and promises of massive military aid to whoever in the counties military should take part in a coup.

Plug in the name of the elected leader, it can be Arbenz or Bosch or Allende or Roldos (in this case it’s Goulart in 1965)the “threat of a good example” is used to keep Latin American down.

God bless her.Unlike Chicken Hawks here, she stood and fought.
