Outrage of the day: woman kills lonely dog because it chewed up her Bible!
A South Carolina woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew’s pit bull with an electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible. Miriam Smith (64) from Spartanburg claims the animal was a “devil dog” and that she killed it to “keep neighborhood children safe”. An unlikely scenario, considering that the poor dog was kept chained in a backyard for its short life.
“Diamond”, the female pit bull was just one year old. She found the Bible on the back porch and chewed it up, doubtless from boredom. The dog’s owner had been away for two weeks because of the bad weather, and Smith took this opportunity to strangle Diamond with a power cord, poured kerosene on the body and burned it. Authorities found the dog’s body under a pile of cut grass, with part the orange cord still attached to her neck.
From the Post and Courier
Smith is the first person is Spartanburg County to face a felony charge under South Carolina’s tougher animal cruelty law, said Jaime Nelson, director of the county’s Environmental Enforcement Department.
Smith’s mental state will likely affect what kind of penalties she faces, Nelson added. He said he was stunned by how flat the woman’s emotions sounded as she recounted on tape what happened to the dog.
Bond has not been set, and Smith could face 180 days in jail if convicted.
“She just acted like — what’s done has been done,” Nelson said.

Christianity = Filling the world’s batshit quota for 5,000 years.
“When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion.” – Robert M. Pirsig, American writer (1928 – present)
How awful. I am a Christian…but no matter what a person or other sentient being did to my Bible…gives no excuse to be cruel or violent…let alone take life. Jesus was the pure example of love and compassion…and for Christians, we are to mirror his image, likening our actions and wills to his as we progress in our faith. To act like this towards an animal who likely was just bored and had little to do, and not take responsibility or accountability for one’s actions (why was the bible left out there?) is disgusting…and disturbing.
Thanks Jessica for taking the time to share with us. I think I can speak for all of our contributors and readers when I say that I hope you stop by again.
Crazy people do crazy things. I’ve heard of people getting shot for jumping in line to buy popcorn or scratching a paint job on a car.
The part of her being Christian and then strangling her dog and burning the body doesn’t seem relevant except for the bible part. It’s like trying to figure out if the Arizona shooter was liberal or conservative.
Goes with saying that animal cruelty of this nature is definitely not a very Christian thing to do.
Being a Christian has EVERYTHING to do with this story. She thought the dog was possessed by the devil and its eating of her holy book of myths (that she retardedly left OUTSIDE within its reach) just proved it.
I’m not going to comment on the craziness of Christianity in general, but that it definitely flavored this rancid hag’s actions!
I wholeheartedly agree that she is a hag of the worse kind but thinking that a dog is possessed by the devil seems to be more of a mental illness, not a question of Christianity.
Here is an excellent site that gives info about the various states’ cruelty laws. I am proud to say that my state, though it only recently outlawed cockfighting (~ 10 ys ago) adopted its anti-cruelty statues before it even became a state.
Notably there are 4 states with NO felony provisions for animal cruelty. These are Idaho, Mississippi, and the Dakotas.

This woman may have severe mental disorders that need yrs of incarcerated treatment….BUT the real reason tougher laws are important are the fact that MOST of the killer like this are NOT mentally ill: Most are domestic abusers: Indeed in the US every day 4 females are butchered in domestic abuse MOST of these killers could have been stopped if they had been severly punished for killing the womans animal first : most do! But no one takes it seriously least of all the law itself. Most serial killers could also be stopped BEFORE they kill humans for the same reason…& kids tortoring & killing animals [cats /dogs] is an epidemic now MOST are son’s of domestic abusers AND are future domestic abusers and or serial killers. THAT is why the tougher laws were needed and TOUGHER THAN THIS are STILL needed. We can save thousands of animals from such hellish suffering & death…Includind the neglect this dog suffered from…AND we can help millions of women/girls get more safely out of domestic abuse….Stop abusers before that kill any more animal AND before they kill the women/girls: SAME with their son’s [who can get help ] AND same goes for our future serial killers. The mentally ill: as I suspect this woman to be CAN get help INCACERATED in a humane hospitla BUT kept OFF the streets for her own good as well. We can turn this bad-boy around with tougher laws AND wiser sentencing.
People do cruel things. Not surprising that some fundie Christian would make headlines doing cruel things. ” . . . mental state will likely affect what kind of penalties she faces. . . ” as should the mental status of anyone who believes in sky pixies and insanely improbable mythology over scientific fact.
What is it about these people? Never mind I just don’t want to know, how we as humans seem to just be devolving instead of evolving into better people.
This ‘good’ woman is in for a shock, when she crosses over and finds herself in a place with a NO DOGS ALLOWED sign on the wall, eh that ain’t Heaven.
Good point Boomer (I have a dog named Boomer) 🙂
A lousy 180 days in jail? That’s a misdemeanor, not a felony sentence. Although I am opposed to the death penalty I would make an exception in this case.
180 days in jail isn’t punishment enough for such a repulsive act of cruelty.
