Man made global warming is causing extreme rain

It’s mostly Republicans who deny the science of climate change.  How they can be blind to what they see is beyond me.  Read this article by PhiBeta contributor Arthur Cooper:

Extreme rainstorms and snowfalls have grown substantially stronger, two studies recommend, with scientists for the first time finding the telltale fingerprints of man-made global warming on downpours that typically trigger deadly flooding.

Two studies in Wednesday’s concern of the journal Nature link heavy rains to increases in greenhouse gases much more than ever prior to.

One group of researchers looked at the strongest rain and snow events of every year from 1951 to 1999 in the Northern Hemisphere and discovered that the far more recent storms had been 7 percent wetter. That may possibly not sound like significantly, however it adds up to be a substantial increase, said the report from a team of researchers from Canada and Scotland.

The study didn’t single out distinct storms but examined worst-of-each-year events all over the Northern Hemisphere. Whilst the study ended in 1999, the close of the decade when scientists say climate alter kicked into a greater gear, the events examined had been comparable to far more recent disasters: deluges that triggered last year’s deadly floods in Pakistan and in Nashville, Tenn., and this winter’s paralyzing blizzards in parts of the United States.

The alter in severity was most apparent in North America, but that could possibly be due to the fact that is where essentially the most rain gauges are, scientists said.

Both studies ought to weaken the argument that climate alter is really a “victimless crime,” said Myles Allen of the University of Oxford. He co-authored the second study, which connected flooding and climate alter in the United Kingdom. “Extreme weather is what in fact hurts individuals.”

Jonathan Overpeck, a University of Arizona climate scientist, who didn’t take component in either study, praised them as sensible and “particularly relevant given the array of extreme weather that we’ve seen this winter and stretching back over the last couple of years.”

Not all of the extreme rain and snow events the scientists studied trigger flooding. But since 1950, flooding has killed far more than 2.3 million folks, according to the World Wellness Organization’s disaster database.

The British study focused on flooding in England and Wales in the fall of 2000. The disaster price a lot more than $1.7 billion in insured damages and was the wettest autumn for the region in much more than 230 years of record-keeping.

Researchers discovered that global warming far more than doubled the likelihood of that flood occurring. Comparable studies are now under method to examine regardless of whether last year’s deadly Russian heat wave and Pakistan floods ?a which had been component of the very same weather event ?a could be scientifically attributed to global warming.

For years scientists, relying on fundamental physics and climate information, have said global warming would likely trigger extremes in temperatures and rainfall. But this is the first time researchers have been able to point to a demonstrable cause-and-effect by using the rigorous and scientifically accepted strategy of looking for the “fingerprints” of human-caused climate alter.

The scientists took all of the information that shows an increase in extreme rain and snow events from the 1950s by means of the 1990s and ran dozens of laptop or computer models several times. They put in the effects of greenhouse gases ?a which come from the burning of fossil fuels ?a and then ran several models without having those aspects. Only when the greenhouse gases are factored in do the models show a comparable increase to what truly happened. All other natural effects alone do not create the jump in extreme rainfall. Basically, the pc runs show climate alter is the only method to explain what’s happening.

In reality, the personal computer models underestimated the increase in extreme rain and snow. That’s puzzling and could possibly be even much more troubling for our future, said Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University, who wasn’t component of the study.

Comparable fingerprinting studies have discovered human-caused greenhouse gas emissions triggered modifications in far more than a dozen other ecological approaches: temperatures on land, the ocean’s surface, heat content in the depths of the oceans, temperature extremes, sea level pressure, humidity at ground level and greater in the air, general rainfall amounts, the extent of Arctic sea ice, snowpack levels and timing of runoff in the western United States, Atlantic Ocean salinity, wildfire harm, and also the height of the lower atmosphere.

All those signs say global warming is here, said Xuebin Zhang, a investigation scientist for the Canadian government and co-author of the Northern Hemisphere study. “It is affecting us in several directions.”

Most of the 10 outside climate professionals who reviewed the papers for The Related Press referred to as the study sound and powerful.

Nonetheless, climate scientist Jerry North of Texas A&M University, whilst praising the work, said he worried that the studies had been making too firm a connection based on weather data that might be poor in some locations. But Francis Zwiers of the University of Victoria, a lead author of the study with Zhang, said the data was from National Weather Service gauges and is reliable.

“Put the two papers together and we start to see an emerging pattern,” said Andrew Weaver of the University of Victoria, who wasn’t component of either study. “We ought to continue to expect increased flooding related with increased extreme precipitation simply because of increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas. And we have no one to blame but ourselves.”
