Mubarak steps down.

This is a fluid story, more as it develops. From MSNBC:

Hosni Mubarak left Cairo for the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, according to sources and officials, after protesters marched on his main presidential palace and held vast rallies across Egypt.

NBC News reported Mubarak had left from Almaza military airport with his family, citing a high-ranking official and a security source, and the news was later confirmed by a local government official.

However the significance of the move was unclear as Mubarak regularly travels to the town on the southern tip of the Sinai region, where he has a palace.

Mubarak passed most of his powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman Thursday night, rebuffing the demands of hundreds of thousands of demonstrators that he step down immediately.

U.S. officials told NBC News that despite confusion over a speech by Mubarak Thursday — in which he appeared to suggest he was still ultimately in charge — the Obama administration was confident that Suleiman was now running the country.

It will be an interesting weekend.

Update: The Army is now in charge. From MSNBC:

Hosni Mubarak has resigned as president of Egypt, the country’s vice president said in a brief statement Friday.

Omar Suleiman, speaking on state television, said Mubarak had decided to give up “the office of the president of the republic” and said the Supreme Council of the armed forces would “run the affairs of the country.”

The news swept the country and Tahrir Square, home of the protest movement, erupted in celebration.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters had gathered for a huge rally on what they called “Farewell Friday,” and after 18 days they finally achieved their main goal.

There is dancing in the streets, all the news channels are showing it live. The graphic above was tweeted last week by an Egyptian from Liberation Square. Personally, I feel the VP is just as corrupt as Mubarak as he was a close friend of the Dictator.

As long as they keep Suleiman out of power its a good thing. Suleiman is a torturer. Watch the Democracy Now video I just put up. He is part of the rendition team that Bush43 put together, and he personally tortured people according to DN’s sources.

Yeah I had read about that a few days ago, somewhere when it was coming to light he may have been the replacement. Same old same old right? Kudos to the Egyptians for doing this in a non violent way and in a relatively short period of time. Takes that whole “second amendment remedies” argument and tosses it out on its ear doesn’t it?
