Happy Birthday MMA!!!

Read Time:4 Minute, 10 Second

One year ago today, at 12 noon ET, MadMikesAmerica (MMA) was born.

All of our wonderful writers, (many of whom had been with me since the blogspot days), happily joined in the fun of learning the brand new template and their wonderful words continued to roll out.

Sadly, for any number of reasons, several of those writers have gone their own way, and while we wish them luck in their new endeavors, we miss them and want them to know that almost all are welcome here, whether it be in their writings or their comments.

From time to time we get criticized by the “pure” bloggers for trying to make a buck or two.  We have never made a secret of the fact that we have minimal advertising.  It is a matter of covering monthly costs [and our few Google ads don’t come close to doing that] but we are still working on it.  The allegation by the arrogant and uninformed that we are making money is laughable, although some day we hope to do just that so please click the Google ads.  We would LOVE to pay our authors for their great work.

There are those who say that we don’t allow writers to express their personal or political views if those views fly in the face of our editorial position.  Nothing could be further from the truth, and we don’t censor content or comments either. If you write something that is unpopular you can expect to feel the heat from our readers. So if you want to cook in our kitchen make sure you can sweat with grace and aplomb.

Shortly before we launched our latest theme, Alan Thornton (Holte Ender), a writer who had been with me since the very early days, offered to become a part of MMA’s management team and I took him up on that offer.  Since then we have not only become fast friends we have formed a solid partnership, dedicated to making MMA and enjoyable experience.

To give you an idea how far we have come in the first year:

In our first month of operation we had 3,281 visitors.  We were ecstatic.  In the months to come Holte and I would hang on the phone until after midnight to watch the numbers climb so we could reach that Mt. Everest of blog visitors in one day: 1, 000.  I’ll never forget the day we made it to 997! We were slightly disappointed we hadn’t made it to the summit but we were happy.  After all we had been used to baby blog numbers of between 20-500 a day page views, much less visitors.

On July 16, 2010 [using our new tool Google Analytics] we had 40,623 visitors on that day alone.  We were really happening now!  As I write this we are just a few thousand removed from having the great privilege of entertaining 1 million visitors at MMA. By the end of this month we will surpass the million mark.

It takes hard work, a lot of hard work, and I cannot thank my friend Alan often enough for being such a tireless advocate and friend to not only MMA, but also to me.  We are looking forward to steering this ship into the future with a lot of exciting things to come, including a new theme, and some seriously cool tech plug-ins.

We thank each of our readers and friends for all you do. Your loyalty is appreciated both on MMA and on the FaceBook pages and your comments are welcome, even if everyone doesn’t agree with what you say. Please tell your friends to become our friends!

Occasionally we are asked where we get our news.  We get our news where  the big guys get their news and we are not for one minute ashamed of aggregating from the wire services or other sites to bring you the latest stories, pictures, videos and etc.  Our talented writers will continue to produce some of the best articles, news items, and stories on the web and video reports are on the way as our new theme is developed.

As is always the case your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are most welcome.  Please let us know how we can improve and how we can make your visits even more pleasurable.  Just put your suggestions in the CONTACT form at the top of the home page.  That also goes for those that may want to become part of the MMA team.  Just drop us a note.

In conclusion: WE’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY….and the best is yet to come!  Thanks again to all our wonderful readers, with a serious tip of the hat to our loyal contributors.  All that you do is appreciated and we would not be where we are without you.

Thanks of course to The Beatles who didn’t quite get our name right but came close if you don’t listen “closely.”

Enjoy my wonderful friends. Enjoy:

Congrats Mike. I hope to slow down enough to get back to the Edge again. We all appreciate the work from you and Alan. Much appreciated are also the readers who also take the valuable time to come by and read and comment. It has been a long time since the old blogspot and I am sure more fun for me than you (all I had to do was be a wise ass).

Mother Hen – Don’t get hung up on comments, they are overrated in this busy world. It’s nice when you get them, but equally important is “like”. Usually it’s your friends or the site regulars that comment. I had a post that had 1000s of hits and only 24 comments a third of them mine, but was “liked” 400 times, by strangers, tweeted dozens of times again by ‘whoever.’ When a post gets “liked” it’s being shared. So people think it is worthy without saying a word.

Exactly right Holte, although from time to time that dang “like” button doesn’t count properly, so the best results come from the search engines which of course we love 🙂

How in Jesus’ name did I miss this? Happy birthday to the gang over here, you have changed my life with your patience, understanding, and your liberal view of writing what I want and when I want. Can’t be happier and hope you keep me around for a while.

People blog for different reasons. Once they start, some eventually come to terms with what their true motives for writing are. Some love to write, and it shows. Some are inspired to write for catharsis- to vent their spleen, and it shows. Some are actually professionals who just want to share knowledge for the greater good.

My first post here was Zombieaster- March 31st last year. https://madmikesamerica.com/2010/03/zombieaster/

This was one of my best ones too, a bit of a sharing/ anti-religious rant, but a quality bit I thought. Back then I had no knowledge of how to fill out the stuff on the bottom enabling links and marketing. I was still a newbie at pictures and photos, and didn’t know how to do tags even.

I caught the “hit bug” early on- liking to see my posts rise to the top of the popular lists. But I like comments even more. A hit is no guarantee that my post was read- someone might have clicked on it but thought it looked too long, didn’t like the first paragraph- whatever. If I got a comment though, it meant the commenter had read it.

Since I am just massaging my ego with my erstwhile blog efforts, I’ve never expected any compensation except for the minor feedback of commentary. UNLESS I’d done one of my “change the world” posts in which case I wanted that message spread far and wide.

I’ve enjoyed the platform, the writers, the feedback, and the dubious notoriety of being perhaps the only writer who has had one entire post not only pulled from publication, but deleted entirely due to prurience 😉

Yes MH you have the distinct honor of being the only author to have a post removed because of “prurience.” My congratulations :-). I must correct your observation, however, that because someone comments means they read the story in its entirety. It has been my experience that the opposite if often the case. Some will comment on a post after a cursory read, or after reading the comments of others. There is an example of that on one of today’s posts, although I cannot reveal the post or the author of that comment.

In conclusion your words are missed. Thanks for stopping by to say “hi.”

Happy birthday indeed. This is one of the best blogs on the web. The only area where I would like to see it improve may not be an improvement at all. I would like to see more conservative voices and more religious voices represented. I am not sure if it would actually be better, though. It would be an interesting thing.

The thing that this blog has over others, including big names, is that you can digest much information / commentary / humor, very quickly.

With some other blogs, it feels too much like work, which defeats much of the purpose of reading blogs in the first place.

I was unaware that this child was only one year old. I thought I was in a nursing home when I was really in a nursery. The success for such a young site is incredible, but I can see why. Once you come here, you come back. That’s just how it is.

Thanks for the kind words John. We have tried to recruit writers with a different viewpoint but they seem intimidated by the gang over here. If you know anyone with a different viewpoint, who want to write regularly, please have them contact us. Thanks again.

I know someone who routinely posts on ultra liberal sites and intensely debates the conservative view against teams of “enemies.”

Until he is insulted, which is usually pretty quick, he is respectful and gracious, but forceful. I am not sure if I should point him this way for two reasons:

1. He digs deep and offends a lot of people because of his arguments. He posts occasionally at the Beekeeper’s site and religiously at Dave’s Freedom Rants. You may know those with whom he routinely quarrels: Dave, Weaseldog, S.W. Anderson, John Myste, etc.

The game he plays is one of political rhetoric and “fact” disputing. It is the same game played by many of us liberals. I am not sure if he would fit in or it would become too aggressive here.

2. I don’t want to encourage him to throw himself into another lion’s din.

I said I would like to see it. I am not sure if it is me wanting to witness a car accident or something more noble. I think maybe my desire is less than honorable.
