Peeing on a stick and posting to YouTube

Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

More and more women are dipping their pregnancy tests into a cup of urine, squealing with delight, and then … uploading a video of the whole thing to YouTube. Marisa Meltzer reports on the growing spate of “WombTube” videos—many of which have 50,000 views and bust the conventional wisdom that you should stay totally mum about becoming a mum until the end of the first trimester. Are these people nuts, wonders Meltzer on Slate? “I can’t entirely understand why someone would post her pregnancy results for the world to see, and since none of the WombTubers I reached out to would respond to my questions, I remain baffled….” but intrigued.

“The emotional rollercoaster they promise is highly addictive and, since they almost always result in good news, a pleasant pay off.” Meltzer digs into the world of WombTube, and comes up with four categories of videos. Search YouTube for “pregnancy test results,” and here’s what you’ll find:

  • Heartstring Tugger: A husband (possibly crying) is likely involved, maybe a child.
  • Nothing But Pee: The test is the star in this video … along with a cup of urine.
  • Weary Warrior: These feature women who’ve been trying for a while ” wielding a pee stick like a pro.” You occasionally see negative results, but more often there are tears of joy.
  • Funny Ones: Meltzer points to a prime example—one in which the mom-to-be tells her hubby she wants to take the positive test to church.

Oh my, this is so much more entertaining than the “Mentos-in-diet-Coke” Youtube trend.

There’s even one that references atheism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d3vWFokjxk&feature=related
