What do YOU know about religion or the Ten Commandments?

Read Time:2 Minute, 8 Second

Now this is an interesting billboard.  It shows the love and compassion exhibited by so many Christians.  Hypocrisy is the Christians middle name, thus the fond appellation: Jesus H. Christ.

Among the most hypocritical of all are the representatives who pander to their base while lying about their own “base” needs.  The Jesus Jumpers are everywhere.  Most of them are harmless, but there are the few, such as the author of this billboard, or the congressman portrayed in the video, that just take the cake.  Enjoy:

That Americans don’t know much about their own faith is hardly news. In one widely-seen video clip, comedian Stephen Colbert interviewed Georgia Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, who co-sponsored a bill to require display of the Ten Commandments in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Colbert asked Westmoreland to name the Ten Commandments.

According to a March 2007, USA Today survey revealed that 60 percent of Americans can’t name the Ten Commandments.

In addition sociologists have long known that religious people are no more honest or trustworthy than the non-religious, and the new poll suggests that atheists and other non-believers are actually better informed about the religious world than the faithful themselves.

So, how do you compare with the average American when it comes to the question of religions? Here’s your chance to find out.

Take the Pew Research Center’s  short, 15-question quiz, and see how you do in comparison with 3,412 randomly sampled adults who were asked these and other questions in the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey. This national poll was conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life from May 19 through June 6, 2010, on landlines and cell phones, in English and Spanish.

When you finish the quiz, you will be able to compare your knowledge of religion with participants in the national telephone poll. You can see how you compare with the overall population as well as with people of various religious traditions, people who attend worship services frequently or less often, men and women, and college graduates as well as those who did not attend college.

Take the Quiz

Your responses on the quiz do NOT affect the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey’s results so have fun and please let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

I notice those who did poorly are not bragging the way we did. Be proud of your performance, other people.

15/15, though I guessed on one (apparently correctly). My victory makes me want to go eat a baby now.

Oh no! I missed two. I guess I’m pretty dumb when it comes to the Bible huh?

13 out of 15. I didn’t know The Jewish ones.

As an atheist, I still read the bible. I have a copy at home that I have sticky noted all the really bad, biggot parts that preachers don’t really read. All the atheists I know have armed themselves with the same knowledge. Christians are hard to argue with, they go around in circles and start to confuse even themselves when they defend god. When they are done, I like to whip out my bible and enlighten them on their own religion and how hateful it is.

So I am not surprised at the high numbers; it is our job to know the enemy.

Really, Jess. Without some kind of proof, I am not sure if your word is enough. C’mon. 15 of 15? What are the odds?

I love your blog, Jess. I know, it has no home and is scattered all over the internet. It is still a great blog, though.

Stop making things up.

Jess you’ve won a vacation for two to the magical Island of Coney from Travelocity. Wait. That’s not the right show. Was there an amazing race?

I took the quiz. I guessed at a few of them, but I got 15 of 15 right. I don’t mean to brag. I am just dutifully reporting the fact that I am really smart.
