Prosecutors going after Edwards

Will John Edwards go to jail?

I really like John.  He seemed to be dedicated to his dying wife, and devoted to his beautiful children, but then something happened.  He decided that new sex was much better than old sex, and sex in secret places was the coolest thing ever.  Sadly, this former senator, turned presidential candidate did a lot of things that belied how he presented himself as clean cut, hard working, compassionate and kind to all.

The Obama administration’s Justice Department has given federal prosecutors the go ahead to prosecute former Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards.  This is so sad, really, given that this charismatic man, once compared to John Kennedy, has seen his life crash around him.  His wife of many years, Elizabeth, dead of cancer, his children, once devoted, fractured and torn.

Edwards is aware he is facing an indictment and is considering his options, ABC’s Jonathan Karl reported.  Chances are his options will include a plea deal with prosecutors before things really get nasty.

According to TPM Federal prosecutors were reportedly nearing a decision in the case against the former Democratic Senator from North Carolina as of February. Federal prosecutors have been working on a case alleging the former senator violated election laws as he tried to cover up his affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter.

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment, but DOJ policy prohibits commenting before any indictment is made public.

What do you think should happen to the former presidential candidate?  Are we all of vulnerable to such temptations, and if so, do we act on them?  Are we victims of choice and is that choice always rational? Do you think former senator John Edwards should go to jail and if so please tell us why?

The Bush administration was littered with people who committed multiple crimes against this country which were tantamount to treason and yet not one has ever been so much as investigated by this justice department. During the current Attorney General’s confirmation hearing he said “No one is above the law, and we will follow the evidence, the facts, the law, and let that take us where we should.” Apparently he wasn’t referring to anyone in the Bush administration. John Edwards might be guilty of campaign finance misfeasance, just as Roger Clemens might be guilty of lying to Congress, but does that really compare to torture or discrimination or revealing the identity of a CIA agent? What exactly are the priorities over at the justice department? Prosecuting John Edwards is all well and good, but perhaps the AG might want to look into investigating some real crime.
