Australia to slaughter millions of camels
Murdering camels to reduce greenhouse gases is latest nonsense from down-under
It’s time to meet another global warming bad-guy: the lowly camel. Australia’s government, incredibly, is pitching a proposal in which it would be a-OK to kill camels in the name of reducing greenhouse gas emissions—and in exchange for cash. The AP reports that in one year’s time, just six of these creatures will burp about 600 pounds of methane into the air, which is roughly equivalent to the amount of CO2 a car produces in the same amount of time. With a population of 1.2 million wild camels, the country sees them as a big problem.
Sadly, it’s a problem that’s growing: The number of camels doubles every nine years despite culls, according to government estimates. The proposal, released for public comment this week, would allow hunters to slaughter camels for meat as well as for carbon credits; industrial polluters would then buy the credits from these sharpshooters to offset their own carbon emissions. Killing the methane-belching animals from a helicopter in exchange for carbon credits would be legit, too, so long as the camel was killed humanely and its carcass abandoned.
Thoughts on the great camel killing venture?

Australia has a large aid to Africa budget, but is slaughtering feral camels. They could maximize the aid by sending healthy female camels to people whose herd animals are dying from drought, at the same time reducing the reproduction in the feral herds.
Please help end the wasteful cull now being proposed.

See the movie The Weeping Camel”. Understand that this creature is providing life for millions of people all over the planet. Keep their living space intact and treat them with respect. Charlotte
Thanks Charlotte and I agree completely.
Nonindigenous species are a real problem in Australia. Camels are like a plague down there(along with dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs and many others). They have been culling and using other means to control camels for decades but the population still keeps growing. They need to do something. I suspect that the idea of greenhouse gas emission control was just something someone threw out there and added to the pot to get more people involved.
All animal slaughter needs to be done in a humane and nonwasteful manner. “abandoning” carcasses is unacceptable.
“so long as the camel was killed humanely and its carcass abandoned.” Should that be “not abandoned?”
Sure, it’s easy for granola chewers outside the problem to scream “save the camels,” but if you’re an environmentalist dealing with the problem it’s another story altogether.
You make a good point SH. I thought that “abandoned” thing was rather strange. Thanks for your input.
Is the camel an endemic or an introduced species?
How about the Aussies ride camels instead of driving cars. Less use of oil so they operate cheaper. Find a way of capturing the methane gas and it can be renewable energy. Man, we will have this planet barren and destroyed before we use up all of the energy.
I think that our continuing efforts to use all of the energy may well be working toward that “barren” thing as we speak.
