Teen loses life to save her dog

This is one of the saddest stories I have read in a long time.

Taylor Stinchcomb’s parents offered her a choice on her 13th birthday. They would lease a horse for her to ride or allow her to bring home a dog.

She went with the dog.

Stinchcomb’s family said she adopted a 4-year-old Doberman pinscher from an animal shelter and named him Romulus. The two were inseparable; neighbors saw them walking through their Gurnee subdivision practically every day, a huge, contented smile on Stinchcomb’s face.

Girl flees in parent’s van with her dying dog

An Illinois teenager’s attempt to stop her dog from being put down ended tragically early Tuesday in a rollover car accident, the Lake County News Sun reports. Taylor Stinchcomb, 15, and a friend ran away with Taylor’s sick Doberman in her parents’ minivan, after learning the dog had cancer and would likely be put down. Taylor, too emotional to drive, gave the wheel to her 15-year-old friend— who lost control of the minivan. Not wearing a seatbelt, Taylor was pinned by the vehicle, and though she was awake and talking when paramedics arrive, died at a local hospital. Romulus, the Doberman Taylor had picked from a rescue shelter two years earlier, was thrown from the vehicle and killed.

The unnamed friend was buckled in at the time of the accident, and walked away from the crash. Police described her as “distraught and incredibly upset” as she tried to direct emergency crews to the scene of the crash. She has a learner’s permit, but faces tickets for speeding and driving without a license.

Thanks to the Chicago Tribune and Newser for parts of this story.

I would welcome your thoughts on this sad story of this young girl and her love for her dog.

Survival of the fittest, honestly a girl that stupid probably deserved it in the first place.

What a cruel and insensitive thing to say.

This story is heart-breaking all around. I only pray (yes, even me) that the friend and parents can find some way to move beyond what has happened–maybe a collection for an animal shelter in her memory, so that the public has a way of showing through action that their thoughts are with those involved.

I am not sure what to say Carol. A terrible accident and tragedy to be sure. Perhaps someone might have done a better job of explaining to the child that her beloved friend was in pain and was suffering. I just don’t know.

Sad, sad, sad. I suppose the only little bit of good out of this is that Taylor and Romulus are together.
