Sperm banks: Why do men want to “share” their goods?
Qualifying to donate to sperm banks can be quite an ordeal
Wow, what fun I had in my response to breasts, I couldn’t wait to get on this next intellectual topic, sperm banks.
Now, had this been an actual bank, only the person on the signature card could make withdrawals . . . so this is a ‘special’ bank. So today I see a news segment (nope, not from Today), on a woman petitioning for the ‘donors’ to submit their clinical/medical history prior to donating. In fact, there is legislature to make this a law. Just sayin’.
I must really sound like a loosey goose here, but I don’t get it. When you have sex with someone, you kind of set yourself up for whatever history is coming your way. When you car shop, you get a limited warranty. When you babyshop, you get as is. And for the overwhelming majority, that’s awesome. But, then there are that few . . .
Why do men donate to sperm banks?
So, let’s analyze this on both ends. First, why the choice for a sperm donor? Today I heard it was due to age, and ‘my clock was clicking and I wasn’t in a relationship’. And then there are the same sex relationships, independent parents, etc. I don’t know as a psychologist how I really feel about this. I deal with enough divorced/ended relationship families . . . now to figure out how to classify a sperm-donor-baby-daddy that didn’t reveal his medical history. Hmmm, this is mind boggling.
Now there’s the daddy. I have first hand seen that there are enough men on this website to educate me on this particular topic (don’t make me go back to the breast talk). I swear I am curious. I swear I am without judgment when I ask this.
Other than the small amount of monetary gain, why do men want to ‘share’ their goods if they are choosing to not be involved? I don’t understand. Someone asked me this today, and I said, ‘Well, there’s the element of control . . .’ and then I just shut up, because I freaking haven’t a clue and someone needs to quiet the counselor every now and then.
So, after you educate me on the why rationale, please let’s discuss the factor of whether or not, besides moral obligation, these men should be legally responsible to provide a medical and/or psyc history. If I feel satisfied with your responses, I may, just may, submit an article that let’s you talk about women’s buttocks.

Tamra, once again you are in a provocative mode. I am beginning to wonder if you are shopping for mates. 🙂 Just kidding.
Here is my psycho babble, anthropological B.S. since I have never done it I really don’t know theory on the subject. Breaking humans down to their most basic form they are still animals and are still driven by the same basic needs; continuation of the species and food, most likely in that order. There have been a number of studies which have shown that females of the human species are similar to those of other animals in that when looking for a mate often look for some one who will be a good provider and physically be able provide her with good healthy strong children. Males of the human species like other animals try to dominate and spread their seed as often and as widely as possible so as to broaden their dominance in the animal world. You can watch this process in the vast savannahs of the bars, lounges, and night clubs in cities spread across the country. Their mating rituals are carried out in various strutting and dancing, mixed with pauses for chatting and flirting. This ritual also involves some consumption alcoholic beverages to bolster bravery and lessen inhibitions so they can try each other out. Many times there is the consequences of unintended child production which must be dealt with, usually by the female since often she doesn’t get the male’s last name. The males of this species is bad about lying about things like that and their marital status.
In the subject at hand, the sperm donation, it may be more about ego and feelings of superiority, or the opposite. Some poor smuck who can’t find a female who will give him the time of day so this way he can get his sperm out among the masses.
The question lies now with why women choose to go a sperm bank instead of using the normal mating ritual. The most logical reason of course is that her initial choice of a mate wasn’t very sound and the mate she chose didn’t have enough punch to get the job done. Or, on the other hand, there is no man in her life but she wants to have a child on her on and she thinks if she goes to a sperm bank that they will have screened the sperms for intellect, looks, athleticism, muscle structure, stamina, hair color, and eye color. In other words, ugly Betty gives birth to Fabian with a brain.
I am sure there are much smarter folks out there than I that can make better sense of this than I, at least I hope so. My suggestion is that she have them checked for the MAOA gene and the XYY chromosome so she doesn’t get a serial killer for a child. 🙂
After reading this I realized I rarely go inside banks anymore, get my cash from ATM, make my deposits at the drive-thru and considering my age (secret) I will never visit the inside of a sperm bank either.
I’m with you Cindy about both types of banks, always seem to be withdrawing from one and never putting deposits in the other.
