From my post:

… in addition to any kind of cuts that need to be made from the budget, there also needs to be some type of specific, limited tax increase direct to the area which caused the overage. One solution is to assess a WAR TAX to pay for the expenditures during the Iraq (approved by congress) and the Afghanistan (approved by congress) Wars–or Conflicts, if you choose. Even the Republicans cannot argue that these spending costs belonged to them as much to the Democrats.

A graduated tax based, if nothing else, on how much it would cost to protect their proportion of assets, over the next three years would go a long way to reducing our debt. This specific tax would be for a specific period of time with a specific dollar goal in mind to repay to the treasury the cost of the wars. This would at least put the country back to a place where we were prior to the terror attacks which caused extraordinary expenditures.

Despite the stupid pledge signed by the Republican house members against raising taxes, this one is to address a specific cause that wasn’t budgeted for and thus the money needs replacing. It has nothing to do with growing government, just reducing debts caused by the wars.

Well presented and eloquently stated lazersedge. A graduated tax is not a conservative idea. Most Western nations use this system taxing the richest citizens. Most of these countries also tax small businesses less than large corporations.

The taxes most countries collect are used for social programs, such as education, the environment, and numerous social programs because they don’t spend the bulk of their taxes fighting wars on several fronts.

You’d be a great president. Would you consider throwing your hat in the ring?

Thank you Dorothy for your compliment, but I am so bull headed that my kids have even said they wouldn’t vote for me. I don’t do well playing political nice with stupid people. 🙂

I would probably vote for you. I don’t know what agencies I would add money to, or if I would create a new agency, but I certainly agree with a war tax, and would like to go farther by incrasing the tax a few mopre points on large corporations that made huge profits of war-based government contracts, and not increseing taxes on people of lower median income who’ve borne the brunt of the ‘economic downturn.’
I would also like to drastically defund any and all programs that result in the opression and murder of people in other nations, not to mention this one. I think if the military weren’t able to enforce lopsided U.S. trade policy abroad, and the C.I.A. weren’t busily propping up ‘friendly’ dict- er, governments abroad, the need for the bloated homeland security budget would deflate immediatly. With the money we saved not killing and opressing people, we could definately make headway on energy-self sufficiency, affordable, accessable healthcare, infrastructure modernization, etc.

Very good point Bradley. I think if congress had to think about how to pay for some of the military actions before we jumped into other peoples fights we might be less inclined to do so without a good reason to do so.
