London to New York City rail link?
London to New York City rail link possible
Russia wants to build tunnel
underneath the Bering Strait
A 19,000 mile long London to New York City rail link may be possible in the future if economic developers in Russia get their wish. A massive tunnel is being planned under the Bering Strait, which will link northeast Russia to Alaska. The 65-mile tunnel, first proposed by Tsar Nicholas II in 1906, moved one step closer to development today, after the Kremlin gave its blessing.
What the Bering Strait Tunnel could look like
The mega-project, linking Asia and North America, would cost an estimated $65-$100 billion. Supporters say it would be cheaper and faster to ship goods by train than boat, and that the tunnel would earn about $10 billion per year shipping three per cent of the world’s freight. It would create a high-speed railway line, energy links and a fiber-optic cable network.
The Bering Strait Tunnel was raised during a three-day conference on developing integrated infrastructure in northeast Russia held in Yakutsk, 5,000 miles east of Moscow.
“We should see advanced development of road and rail infrastructure here in the Russian Far East and improvement in the investment climate in Russia as a key aim,” Kremlin official Aleksandr Levinthal said.
The trip from London to New York City via Siberia, is known as “The Long Way Round.” From April 14, 2004 to July 29, 2004, actor Ewan McGregor his friend Charley Boorman traveled from London to New York riding motorcycles along with motorcycle riding cameraman Claudio von Planta they traveled eastwards through Europe and Asia, flew to Alaska and continued by road from there to New York.
The journey was used to bring attention to the humanitarian efforts of UNICEF. During the journey, the team took time out to see and film some of UNICEF’s work. The projects visited were an orphanage in Ukraine housing children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. A DVD of their journey is available.
Giant engineering projects have a habit of changing the way humanity look at each other because opportunities become more important than war. The electrification of the South, the Panama Canal, The Suez Canal. A London to New York City rail link that travels through one time enemy territory would be such a project.
