Musings From The Edge: Republican’s Disease

Read Time:3 Minute, 2 Second

Though this is not really original since I got this in an e mail from a friend. The best credit I can find for this is from Life Story Writing January, 2009 (http://www.lifestorywriting.com/category/addiction/). When I read it I could not help but think about some of the Republicans I know and I hear, particularly those on Fair and Balanced News of Feaux. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, And Rick Perry all come to mind when I read this humorous piece. Perhaps you will agree.

Thinkers Anonymous
It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then — to loosen up. Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone — “to relax,” I told myself — but I knew it wasn’t true.
Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time. That was when things began to sour at home. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother’s.
I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don’t mix, but I couldn’t stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunch time so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, “What is it exactly we are doing here?”
One day the boss called me in. He said, “Listen, I like you, and it \hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don’t stop thinking on the job, you’ll have to find another job.”
This gave me a lot to think about.
I came home early after my conversation with the boss. “Honey,” I confessed, “I’ve been thinking …” “I know you’ve been thinking,” she said, “and I want a divorce!”
“But Honey, surely it’s not that serious.”
“It is serious,” she said, lower lip aquiver. “You think as much as college professors, and college professors don’t make any money, so if you keep on thinking, we won’t have any money!”
“That’s a faulty syllogism,” I said impatiently. She exploded in tears of rage and frustration, but I was in no mood to deal with the emotional drama.
“I’m going to the library,” I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche. I roared into the parking lot with NPR on the radio and ran up to the big glass doors… They didn’t open. The library was closed. To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night.
As I sank to the ground, clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. “Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?” it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker’s Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker. I never miss a TA meeting.
At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was “Porky’s.” Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home.
Life just seemed … easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. I think the road to recovery is nearly complete for me.
Today, I registered to vote Republican.

I am sure that there are numerous other Republicans who deserve to be named to the TA hall of fame. Feel free to add your own favorites.

I stop by MMA every day looking for some good old fashioned “Republican Bashing.” It used to be it was easy. Almost every article simply bashed Republicans! I could just read the first two articles and I’d have my fix for the day and could safely wander off and read Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin and know I was safely innoculated for the day.

But lately MMA has deviated from the R bashing path. News articles….. pet articles….. movie reviews….

And then you add Milton Thornridge, a real, thinking, articulate Republican (or at least conservative) writer. And, low and behold, comments to his entries are often complimentary, some old regulars even grudgingly agree with him.

But Lazersedge has me back on track today. I can safely read Ann Coulter for the first time in weeks. Thanks for the humorous update!

I suppose I could make a smart alecky comment about how I was lazy and wanted the wealthy’s taxes raised so I could get welfare and vote democratic, but that would make me like the people you satirize in your article.

You’re never wrong to question authority and demand answers and justification. We need more of this from rank and file republicans like myself. Not just the old agree with whatever the RNC and Fox news says. While I want God and Guns to be important to my candidates, real plans and vision mean more than useless talking points that are only meant to keep the unthinking in the fold.

Milton, recently you have shown that you don’t belong in this group. There are a number of Republicans who do not belong in this group but sadly they seem to be a small minority in leadership positions. I can’t say much about the Demos either when they were in control of the congress. It seems like they ask for control but when they get they don’t know how to use it responsibility.

It’s too bad but there are no Lincolns or Reagans in my party anymore. I’m just happy that MadMike allowed me to contribute here as I would be hounded off most, if not all right leaning blogs for daring to question the infallibility of Rush Limbaugh and Fox news.

my next post should really rattle the right. probably rattle the athiests that infest MMA also. It came to me while at services Sunday and the preacher was talking about Armageddon, the return of Jesus Christ and the thousand year peace He will preside over.
