Yoandri Hernandez Garrido, 37, known as “Twenty-Four,” lives in Baracoa, Guantanamo province, Cuba. Hernandez loves his extra digits and calls them a blessing, saying they set him apart and enable him to make a living by scrambling up palm trees to cut coconuts and posing for photographs in this eastern Cuban city popular with tourists. Known as polydactyly, Hernandez’s condition is relatively common, but it’s rare for the extra digits to be so perfect.

Polydactyly or polydactylism (from Ancient Greek πολύς (polus) “many” + δάκτυλος (daktulos) “finger”), also known as hyperdactyly, is a congenital physical anomaly in humans, dogs, and cats having supernumerary fingers or toes.

The extra digit is usually a small piece of soft tissue that can be removed. Occasionally it contains bone without joints; rarely it may be a complete, functioning digit. The extra digit is most common on the ulnar (little finger) side of the hand, less common on the radial (thumb) side, and very rarely within the middle three digits. These are respectively known as postaxial (little finger), preaxial (thumb), and central (ring, middle, index fingers) polydactyly. The extra digit is most commonly an abnormal fork in an existing digit, or it may rarely originate at the wrist as a normal digit does. The world record holder for highest number of digits is a boy named Akshat from India. He was born with 7 fingers on each hand and 10 toes on each foot, making for a total of 34 digits.

Evolution may grant us the extra digits somewhere in the future. I’d have to relearn my typing skills I guess. What about guys with 2 penises? Or women with a penis ! Isn’t nature oddly wonderful?

By the way, I had trouble figuring out which one was extra, until I thought about it. I am now checking my own hands out, trying to figure out which finger is missing.

From the photo, I’d have to say it’s a middle finger we’re all missing.
When sufficently motivated, I’ve been known to flip people off in stereo. The Quadraphonic version would be way too much fun for me.

At one time a Neanderthal suddenly noticed a genetically mutated cro magnon, our ancestors, and he grunted: “What a freak.”

Neanderthall DNA is found in modern man.

Or course. Mutations don’t work without shared DNA.

Well, concidering the Cuban cliamte, he’s not likely to have to spend a fortune buying a lifetime’s worth of golves and shoes. Caught a break there.
