6.8 million free laptops for kids, in India
Schoolchildren in the
southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu
will soon receive free laptops
A new program, costing $2 billion, in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, means all 6.8 million students in government-funded secondary schools and colleges will be eligible for free laptops, costing the state government $292 per child.
Supporters of the scheme say it will help disadvantaged children whose parents cannot afford a computer. Critics say the scheme panders to the masses and wastes precious resources.
But others argue that Tamil Nadu is a state on a healthy growth trajectory and that the laptop “give aways” are an affordable cost – the allocation this year constitutes less than 3% of budgeted revenue receipts.
Before free laptops, Tamil Nadu had a great history
Tamil Nadu is one of 28 Indian States and has a population of about 72,000,000. It is the only Indian state to embark on such a forward thinking program as giving free laptops to all of its children.
The history of Tamil Nadu is very ancient and it is believed that human activity in this area began as early as 300, 000 years ago. It is also suggested that the first Dravidians of Tamil country were part of the early Indus Valley settlers and moved south during the advent of Aryans around 1500BC. However the documented history goes back only to the 4th century BC. There are references in the early Sangham literature to the social, economic and cultural life of people. The proximity to the sea established the Tamil Country on the maritime map of the world even before the dawn of Christian era. The Tamils had trade links with ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Free laptops are not free of course, but it is sure a great way to spend taxpayers money.
