America’s Obesity Problem Expands

Just when you think corporate America has outdone themselves by selling the greasiest, most grotesque forms of food, along come more.

If you like “delicious” fast food, this article should ruin your day. Here are a few examples of American excess that should answer the question as to why 60% of us are obese. Hungary instituted a fat tax. If fast food corporations were not so inextricably linked with the American government, perhaps our country could follow Hungary’s example.

Chili’s Ultimate Stacked Burger

This gluttonous monstrosity tops any greasy fast food list. Chili’s won’t share the “nutritional value” or reply to requests for information. The best guesstimate for this gastrointestinal enormity based on a visual estimate is 720 calories (only for the hamburger meat) and 20 grams of saturated fat. Want both the burger and the accompanying fries? The caloric total is 2,003, which 125 grams of fat, 38 grams saturated fat, and 2138 mg sodium in one meal.

That’s only if you don’t order drinks or desert or eat a pile of fries and a soda.

This Big Mouth Burger extravaganza is more calories than most adult women need in an entire day and has 192% of your recommended daily value of fat—it’s equivalent to almost three-quarters cup of straight butter. Add that to a whopping 190% of the recommended saturated fat intake and a day’s worth of salt.

KFC Double Down Chicken Sandwich

Buns need not apply and you’ll definitely have to lick your greasy fingers after finishing this creation – on the heels of their “healthy grilled chicken” promotion. This jaw-dropping concoction uses two Original Recipe fried chicken filets in place of buns to hold pepper jack cheese, Swiss cheese, bacon and secret sauce. This fried version of the sandwich boasts 540 calories, 32g of fat and 1380mg of sodium. Gross.

Denny’s Fried Cheese Melt

Unfortunately, yum. Just $4 will buy you a deep-fried mozzarella cheese sticks smothered in American cheese and grilled between two slices of sourdough bread at Denny’s. You’ll also get 895 calories, excluding the calorie and fat count of the accompanying side of french fries (540 calories) and a small soda (150 calories).

Denny’s Mac ‘n Cheese Patty Melt

Americans like their food bigger and better. Denny’s complies. Try a hamburger smothered in macaroni and cheese between buttered, toasted potato bread. . According to the Denny’s website, the sandwich has 1690 calories and 99 grams of fat, 36 of them saturated. That’s twice as many calories and eight more grams of fat than are in a stick of butter. That’s without the fries. And for a mere $0.69, you can add more cheese.

Burger King’s BK Big Fish

And you thought fish was healthy: not when it’s deep fried and lavishly lathered in tartar saws. This breaded and fried delight with lettuce and tomato on an all-white sesame seed bun is 640 calories, 32g fat, and 1540mg sodium.

Hardee’s Fried Bologna Biscuit Sandwich

Bologna is bad enough by itself, but Hardee’s garnishes the “meat” with a white-flour biscuit, processed American cheese, a fried egg, in addition to the fried bologna. This is breakfast with 610 calories, 43g of fat, and 1620mg of sodium. You’ll be asleep at your desk by 10:00 a.m.

Quizno’s Tuna Melt

This is a guaranteed 2:00 p.m. put-you-to-sleep offering. This large tuna melt has 1760 calories, 133g fat, and 2120mg sodium. Cut in half and you would be able to eat twice on this day!

Wendy’s Baconator Triple

Like Wendy’s other old-fashioned hamburgers, you can order a single, double, or triple patty burger. Want a triple Baconator? Think 1350 calories, 90 grams of fat (40 of which are saturated), 3.5 grams of trans fat, 320 milligrams of heart-clogging cholesterol, 2780 milligrams of sodium—well, at least it has 2 grams of dietary fiber.

Friendly’s Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt

Friendly’s food menu is not so friendly. Take a look at this Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt. Take two grilled cheese sandwiches as buns for a beef burger topped with mayo, lettuce and tomato. With a scale-scaring, heart-stopping 1,500 calories, 79 grams of fat and 2,090 milligrams of sodium.

Starbucks on Steroids

That 20 oz Venti White Chocolate Mocha with 2% milk and whipped cream is more than a mere cup of coffee you grabbed on the way to work: it’s worse for you than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese. The delightful drink is 580 calories with 15 grams of saturated fat.

You could do worse. new “trenta” size, which holds 31 ounces (916 mL) of select Starbucks beverages and tops the venti by 7 oz.

According to Starbucks’ website, a 31 oz “Trenta” Iced Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha is more than 1,000 calories: almost two Burger King hamburgers. A “Trenta” is larger than the average human stomach.

Love to snack at your local country fair, theme park, or other outdoor gathering? Watch out: these venues are heart-attack inviting venues.

Yes, this is a fried Snickers Bar, but not food.

Lona Sandon, assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, provides a nutritional guide for fair goers.

My educated guess is a serving of fried cola dough, whipped cream and Coke syrup on top is roughly 830 calories. The fried macaroni and cheese is approximately 610 calories; the fried cheesecake in the ballpark of 500 calories; a fried praline will come in around 350 calories; and a tortilla-wrapped hot dog and cheese from the fryer about 550 calories.

One of the most definitive web sites on nutritional information, Calorie King lists the fat and calories of popular food at the fair or festival. Don’t think you can escape with eating a giant turkey leg instead of sweets: you’ll consume 1,136 calories and 54 grams of fat.

  • Fried Snickers (5 oz.): 444 calories and 29 grams (g) fat
  • Fried Twinkie (2 oz.): 420 calories/34 g fat
  • Funnel cake (fried dough) (1): 760 calories/44 g fat
  • Twinkie Dog Sundae: 500 calories/14 g fat
  • Cotton candy: 171 calories/0 fat
  • Fried cheesecake (6 oz.): 655 calories/47 g fat
  • Foot-long hot dog and bun: 470 calories/26 g fat
