Rick Perry hunting retreat called “Niggerhead”
The scramble is on as word spreads about the real Rick Perry and his family’s hunting camp called Niggerhead.
The denials are flying like mosquitoes on a summer’s evening in Texas as presidential contender Rick Perry tries to distance himself from his own history. It seems there is a discrepancy as to when Niggerhead, the oh so affectionate name for the Perry family home away from home, was actually removed.
Here’s the story:
Rick Santorum might not be the only Republican presidential candidate with a name problem. Back when Rick Perry was a young Democrat politician, he used to host events at his family’s West Texas hunting camp, a retreat called “Niggerhead,” reports the Washington Post. The offensive name, written in large, block letters on a big flat rock at the entrance of the camp, long preceded the Perrys’ presence on the 1,070-acre camp, but it’s not exactly clear on when it was removed.
Perry has condemned the word as an “offensive name that has no place in the modern world,” and said that his father painted over the name soon after he began leasing the property in 1983. But several other people, including Perry supporters, say they recall seeing the name on the rock over the years, one as recently as 2008. “I remember the first time I went through that pasture and saw that,” said a retired game warden who supports Perry. “It kind of offended me, truthfully.” Perry’s camp complains to Politico that the Post story is “incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous,” and says that the governor hasn’t visited the camp since 2006 and stopped leasing it a year later.
It’s hard these days to believe anything a politician says, especially a slick finish like Rick Perry. Do you believe him when he says the name Niggerhead was painted over in 1983? I don’t.

The truth of the matter is that Gov. Perry nor his father ever “owned” this hunting camp. They bought “shares” in it similar to a time share that allowed them to hunt there themselves and to bring guests with them. Since there aren’t hundreds of pictures of the offending rock all over the internet we can assume that it was painted over some time ago. This article has to resort to a bar of soap from the first half of the last century.
Why should anyone oppose Perry for this minor matter when there are so many much more serious reasons he should never be president?
Does this really surprise anyone about Perry. I do not believe the man could tell the truth if it would serve him better and it was printed in 3 foot letters right in front of him.
Well said.
Someone called Perry a “cerebral Bush.” Yes, he’s that bad.
The family hunting camp ? Kind of destroys the son of a poor tenant farmer from Paint Creek, TX meme, eh?
LOL LOL! Yup. Destroys that image.
