Have a Sober New Year’s Eve!

Read Time:3 Minute, 6 Second

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, and already the cab companies and AAA are advertising their low cost or free rides for people who can’t stand up.

I’ve been one of those people-throwing up in the bathroom, having to step over someone to get to the toilet. Oh yes, I’ve been to quite a few New Year’s Eve parties, and I wish I could remember them.

Nowadays, I don’t drink a lot, if ever, and neither does my husband. A few people wondered what we would do on New Year’s Eve if we didn’t drink. I’ve compiled a small list of the activities we like and a few that might work for you. Here’s to a sober New Year’s Eve!

1) A film or television marathon. We have watched “Monty Python” episodes, all the “Die Hard” movies, or the “Shrek” series in the past. It’s a lot of fun; snacks are of course involved, and you have everyone sit on pillows or squeeze onto the couch in front of the television.

2) Have a non alcoholic appetizer party! Invite family and close friends to bring one appetizer (no running to Chili’s to pick one up, they must be homemade), fix a few pitchers of iced tea, have some soda for the kids, and pig out. Think of it as the last food fest before the inevitable “I have to lose 10 pounds this year” resolution.

3) Game night. Sounds boring, right? Nope! Whip out Pictionary or Balderdash, play team Scrabble or Up Words, maybe get out the Twister mat you’ve kept hidden for 25 years. Have a video game night-power up the Wii and slay people in tennis or ping pong.

4) Send your significant other an invitation to a formal dinner. Flowers, candles, CLOTH napkins, the works. Dress up. You can have this catered if you absolutely must, but it’s a lot more fun to create the meal yourself. Tournedos of beef, asparagus in butter lemon sauce, baked potatoes and chocolate cake is a very elegant and simple menu. If you want to turn it into a love fest, enlist your amore as a sous chef. Who knows, you might not even make it to the table.

5) Volunteer at a homeless shelter. I know, not very celebratory, but think about it. People who are homeless during the holidays are at a higher risk for suicidal thoughts and actions, and just spending a few hours at a shelter could really make a difference in someone’s life. Bring food and a great attitude, and I promise you, you’ll feel amazing!

New Year’s Eve is a celebration of the old and a ringing in of the new. It’s a magical night, filled with hope and joy, and yes, a ton of alcohol. But there’s no law that says we have to be drinking to ring in 2012. In fact, you stand a much better chance of seeing 2012 if you don’t drink on New Year’s Eve.

If you absolutely must go out and drink, please choose a designated driver, or contact your local cab company to make sure you have a safe way home. Be the designated driver for your group, but be careful-New Year’s Eve is a treacherous night to travel. Best to stay home, if you can. Remember-Mad Mike’s wishes you a very Happy New Year, AND we want you around in 2012, so please don’t drink and drive!

If you have any suggestion for a fun, alcohol free New Year’s Eve celebration, please share them with MMA!

Happy New Year to you Erin! Sounds like you have a real plan. As to a no booze suggestion: Just don’t drink while enjoying your family. If you have to you might have a problem.
