Jon Stewart: Virginia law would treat women like popsicles!

Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

(Newser) – A Virginia Democratic delegate told the Richmond Times-Dispatch yesterday that he thought his Republican counterparts are “probably trying to figure out a way to get [the abortion bill brouhaha] off the front pages.” Good luck with that.

Jon Stewart last night was the latest to pile on in a “Punanny State” segment, in which he slammed the proposal in no uncertain terms—after, of course, reminiscing about seeing the “amazing” Transvaginal Ultrasound, a “15-member jazz-fusion chorus band,” in 1994.

But then he got serious: Because a transvaginal ultrasound would be required at such an early stage in pregnancy, “any woman seeking an abortion must, whether she wants to or not, first lay back in a chair with her spread legs, feet in stirrups, and have an eight- to 10-inch wand put inside her—even if the woman in question is pregnant as the result of a rape,” Stewart said. “I don’t really have a joke here, I just thought I’d tell you.” But there’s some consolation—the woman doesn’t have to look at the image! “Just set your iPod to shuffle, flip through a copy of Vanity Fair, and try to ignore the fact that you’re being handled like a human popsicle.”

@Bob Keller
“The transvaginal sonogram is already used in virtually 100% of abortions done by Planned Parenthood. ”

Citation, please.

Here’s one of many citations available on-line Planned Parenthood Requires Ultrasound Consent for All Abortion Proceedures

Abortion is not without risk. Planned Parenthood and all good doctors take every step possible to insure the safety of the woman.

Ahhhh….. Mike. I HATE the stupidity, arrogance and outright false premise of Stewart’s argument. It’s insulting to anyone’s intelligence and cheapens an important debate.

The real issue is, of course, whether the state should force a woman seeking an abortion to first view an image of the living fetus, heart beating, tiny limbs moving, with all the emotional pain that might cause.

The transvaginal sonogram is already used in virtually 100% of abortions done by Planned Parenthood. It is often necessary to protect the health of the woman and insure a safe and effective abortion. But the mother DOES NOT view the sonograms done by Planned Parenthood (or most other abortion clinics).

I strongly favor (in fact I demand) a Woman’s Right to Chose. I am pro-choice and believe this is a decision that ONLY a the woman has a right to make.

But to call a sonogram rape or being treated like a “human popsicle” is insulting and beyond the pale in attempting to hide the real issues in this debate.

So why, may I ask, if they already have “transvaginal sonogram is already used in virtually 100% of abortions done by Planned Parenthood”, do they need to be passing a law about it Mr. Keller. Since when did a body of mostly legislators decides they could put into writing a practice that was arbitrarily better than the decision made by a woman and her doctor. Perhaps they to stick than probe up their asses. Something tells me that you know not of what you speak,

I note with great interest that the Republican Governor has announced he will Veto the proposed law.

Bill, I thought I had quite clearly stated the real reason the state legislators were so intent on passing this law in my original post above = Pro-life (anti-choice) advocates wanted to force the woman to view the sonogram in the “hope” the woman would change her mind and not abort. This would, as I stated above, add significant stress in an already stressful situation on the woman and was OPPOSED by virtually all pro-choice and women’s rights groups.

This was and is the real issue. The law, at least in Virginia, is now dead.

At 3 weeks, that’s not what you see. The woman is not forced to view the results of the now defunct (Thank you Sky Cat) trans-vaginal ultrasound. She was, before the VA governor realized that state sponsored rape might not be good for his image, required to allow the state of Virginia insert a foreign object into her vagina against her will. That’s rape.

Also, your use of imagery in the above comment does not scream “pro choice” to me. Just my opinion…
