Marco Rubio – The new Sarah Palin

Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

What does the junior Senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, have in common with Sarah Palin? They are both Tea Party darlings, Palin was on a losing ticket in the 2008 presidential election, Rubio could be on a losing ticket in the 2012 presidential election.

Our politicians have a hard time telling the truth and Marco Rubio is no exception. His appeal (like Palin) is to the uninformed and the “I don’t care if you are a liar brigade”. So, when Rubio tells the story of his family being forced out of Cuba by that “thug Fidel Castro” his fans believe him. They are not interested in the fact that his parents moved to the USA in 1956, three years before Castro overthrew the real “thug” Fulgencio Batista.

Batista - A genuine Cuban thug

Hand-in-hand with US corporations and organized crime, Batista raped and pillaged the Cuban economy and its people for years. To quell the growing discontent amongst the populace — which was subsequently displayed through frequent student riots and anti-Batista demonstrations — Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also utilizing his anti-Communist secret police and US-supplied weaponry to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions; ultimately killing as many as 20,000 Cubans. This was the Cuba Rubio’s parents abandoned.

Ignoring these for the public record truths, Marco Rubio sells himself as the “son of Cuban exiles.” The Washington Post bothered to peruse the records and set us straight on these piddling little facts. Although the Cuban exiles in Miami choose to ignore Rubio’s confused take on his family history. Speak badly about Castro and supporters will come. The cynical Rubio openly lies, his backers in the Cuban community know he is lying, but this is politics, so that’s OK.

Mitt Romney would be a fool if he picked Rubio as a running-mate just to harvest favor with Cuban-exiles and so-called Hispanic voters. The exiles may be somewhat fanatical about what they believe, but the majority of Spanish-speaking voters in country as a whole will not be suckered so easily.

The golden phone presented to Batista by ITT, a US owned communications company. The infamous phone is now in a museum.

In a manner that antagonized the Cuban people, the US government used their influence to advance the interests of and increase the profits of the private American companies, which “dominated the island’s economy.” As a symbol of this relationship, ITT Corporation, an American-owned multinational telephone company, presented Batista with a gold-plated telephone, as an “expression of gratitude” for the “excessive telephone rate increase” that Batista granted at the urging of the US government.
