We are Woman: The Founders

Read Time:3 Minute, 46 Second

The women behind the movement.

Wendy Cartwright

Wendy Cartwright cites Hillary Clinton and Rosa Parks as her role models, and when you get to know Wendy, you see why. Like both Hillary Clinton and Rosa Parks, Wendy Cartwright has never been afraid to stand up for her beliefs, whether at a No Nukes rally in the 1970’s, or marching with her daughter for women’s rights. Wendy believes that women’s health equals the health of the family, and she has been active in events and organizations that inspire and motivate her.

Wendy is very active in Florida activism, most recently as a member and supporter of Occupy Tampa. Wendy was also involved with the Fair Districts Campaign in Florida, a campaign to help eliminate gerrymandering, getting two amendments on the ballot. 63% of Floridians voted for both amendments. Wendy is also extremely proud to have been elected a delegate to the Florida Democratic Convention.

Wendy, along with the other founders, is part of the initial planning team, helping lead conference calls and reach out to others via social media and email. Wendy believes it is our responsibility to fight this fight for both the women who came before us, and the next generation. Women’s health care is a civil right; it is not negotiable. We Are Woman is excited to have Wendy Cartwright’s energy, passion and talent, and her spirit energizes us every day.

Alaina LaTourette

Alaina LaTourette was raised in Syanon, California, an experimental therapeutic community. Alaina learned from an early age not to differentiate between race, gender or religion, but to see people for who they are. She carries that belief with her, and it has helped her be a better person, a better mother and a passionate advocate and activist for women’s rights.

Alaina grew up attending marches and demonstrations; in fact, her first demonstration was a Free Angela Davis rally. That rally impacted Alaina so deeply that she still has the button she wore in support of Ms. Davis. Alaina also attended the 1989 March for Women’s Lives, the 2000 Million Moms March and the 2004 March for Women’s Lives.

As Lead Coordinator for the Permit Team, Alaina is working with the National Parks Service and an event planner to secure all necessary paperwork for We Are Woman. She is a tireless advocate and a technological wizard, helping to set up forums, organize conference calls and help with the day to day tasks of promotion and web design. Alaina is an extraordinary leader and it is truly inspiring to work alongside her.

Jenni Siri

Jenni Siri is a gifted and extremely talented graphics artist who jumped at the chance to work with We Are Woman. Everything on our website, from our main graphic to our posters to the tee shirts we sell was designed by Jenni. Jenni holds a BFA in visual communications, with minors in photography and psychology.

Jenni Siri has been active is the fight against Citizens United and corporate personhood, and uses social media to bring attention to progressive issues. She has been involved with the Occupy movement and is passionate about equality. As a mother, she realizes that equal rights are a human right, and strives to make the world a better place for not only her grown children but for all.

Jenni was the first co-founder, and as such, she has been involved with We Are Woman from day one. As Lead Coordinator for the Visual Communications group, Jenni is able to use her talent and artistic gifts to create gorgeous graphics that attract and inspire. Jenni is also Lead Coordinator for We Are Woman’s email account, and one of the team leaders for our social media sites. Jenni Siri is a joy to work with, and her beauty, not only in her artwork, but in her spirit, helps We Are Woman stay focused and gives us the energy we need to continue the fight.

As the fourth co-founder, I am honored to be working with Wendy, Alaina and Jenni. They are a powerful force. We Are Woman had humble beginnings, and thanks to the tireless work of these three women, our message, our spirit and our passion continues to draw people to our organization and spread the message of equality far and wide. Wendy, Alaina and Jenni are proof that we, all women, all people, can truly be invincible.

Wil you agree because you hate us. I don’t really take your input seriously.

With all respect to the ladies, I just don’t think this is timely anymore. It was when the crazies were on the debate stage and campaigning their nonsense across the country but now….it’s relatively quiet on the Western Front. Good luck with it anyway.

We’re hearing differently. Kansas, Arizona, Virginia and other states run by the new GOP are trying, over and over again, to pass bills that harm, degrade and demean not only women, but minorities in general.
