Last weekend, we attended our town’s Heritage Days festival. Among the vintage cars and food on a stick, I noticed two women sitting under canvas awning, surrounded by Coach handbags. Eyes narrowing, I wandered over and began perusing their wares. To my delight, the two women, Traci Galles and Carmen Maendel were selling authentic Coach handbags below retail prices. I pounced. We began chatting and they agreed to be interviewed for Mad Mike’s America.
Genoa Denim is a true American success story. A small business, run by two women, offering amazing products to consumers who recognize the quality of high end accessories and clothing, but may not be able to pay full price. I am thrilled to share my interview with Traci and Carmen, founders of Genoa Denim.
Q) The designer denim and high end handbag market is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. What inspired the two of you to start Genoa Denim? What makes Genoa Denim better than many of the other online stores selling denim and handbags?
A) The inspiration for GENOA Denim & Leather Apparel came through originally working for another jeans company. Although it was a reputable company, we found that our clients were requesting designers that they did not carry in their inventory. We also saw more opportunity for growth if we owned our own company. We had a deep desire and passion to establish our own company and work for ourselves instead of someone else. Women’s clothing is a 39 billion dollar industry with handbags coming in lower at 10 billon according to IBISWorld report on market research, size, industry statistics, analysis, and trends. Genoa, Italy is the city where denim originated, so it deemed appropriate to name our company GENOA Denim & Leather Apparel. The Denim & Leather Apparel part came because we know that the combination of high-end denim and handbags is definitely a winning combination.
The main thing that sets us apart from other online denim and handbag stores is that we have unique trade shows that the public is welcome to attend. We encourage our clients to try on our apparel before they purchase. We also provide professional fashion consultant advice to our clients. We have thoroughly researched the fit, styles, and fashion trends to know how to assist someone in finding that perfect pair of jeans for them. We also can help them accessorize with their magical handbag of choice listening very carefully to our clients’ needs and specifications.
Q) How do you purchase your product? Do you have relationships with boutiques and designers?
A) We do have relationships already established with some boutiques and online stores, and we are continuously working on broadening our GENOA designer collection.
Q) What is your typical day?
A) A typical day for us depends on whether we are participating in a trade show. We set up our display of designer apparel and handbags and we are ready for business. A majority of time has been devoted to researching the designers and apparel for GENOA.
Q) You mentioned that Genoa Denim will be carrying other brands later this year. What made you decide to branch out?
A) We desire to develop business relationships with several high-end designers and showrooms. We are in the middle of the process of forming these relationships so we will announce these agreements as they we develop them. We hope our clients will be pleasantly surprised in our addition to the GENOA collection in the future. Our choice of designers has been guided by listening carefully to our clients. When we say our clients are very important to us, we really mean it!

Wish I had known about them before I went and spent almost $85 bucks on an A&F skirt, same size even they have there for only $50. Thanks for the new shopping portal though, I will most definitely use it again. I’ve got way more than enough bags currently, according to hubby anyway, but I will look at them again for purses.
