The Heavy Hitters of Spongebob Squarepants (and a PT Boat)

Read Time:5 Minute, 26 Second

Love the show or hate it, many Hollywood heavy hitters have lent their voices to this program and one might be surprised who has done what (or whom).

Alec Baldwin-Actor-Dennis (“The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie) His SpongeBob role was in the Movie where he played an assassin who was sent by Plankton to eliminate SpongeBob and Patrick.

Alton Brown- American food personality, cinematographer, author, aircraft pilot, and actor. He is the creator and host of the Food Network television show Good Eats, the Feasting on Asphalt and on Iron Chef America-His SpongeBob role was in “House Fancy” where he played the host of Squidward’s favourite show.

Brian Doyle-Murray- is the brother of actor/comedian Bill Murray. He is an alumnus of Saturday Night Live and has also been a voice actor in cartoons such as The Buzz on Maggie, My Gym Partner’s A Monkey, Jackie Chan Adventures, Family Guy and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack-His main SpongeBob role is the Flying Dutchman who made his debut appearance in “Scardy Pants.”

David Bowie-he is an English musician, actor, producer, arranger, and audio engineer. Active in five decades of rock music and frequently reinventing his music and image-Lord Royal Highness (“Atlantis SquarePantis”)

Dennis Quaid- he is an American actor. Raised in Texas, he became known during the 1980s after appearing in several successful films, and established a career as a Hollywood actor-Grandpa Redbeard (“Grandpappy the Pirate”)

John Rhys-Davies-He is an English-born Welsh character actor and voice artist. He is perhaps best known for his portrayals as the charismatic Arab excavator Sallah in the Indiana Jones films and the dwarf Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and he played on the “SyFy” channel original movie Anaconda 3 as Professor Challenger and voiced Mowgli’s adopted father from the Disney movie, The Jungle Book 2– His character is Man Ray.

Marion Ross-she is a Golden Globe-nominated and American actress and is best known for her role as Marion Cunningham the famous TV sitcom, Happy Days from 1974-1984-Grandma Squarepants.

Pantera- Active from 1981-2003, Originated in Arlington, Texas, they are an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. It was founded by original members were Vinnie Abbott (drums) and Dimebag Darrell (guitar) in 1981. Bassist Rex Brown would join in 1982 and in 1987 Phil Anselmo would become the group’s lead vocalist, completing the band’s most successful lineup that would remain together for 16 years-Music featured in “Pre-Hibernation Week”

R. Lee Ermey- He is a former U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor and later Golden Globe-nominated actor. He has been the host of two shows on the History Channel, Lock and Load and Mail Call. He has also voiced characters in cartoons, such as the Sarge from the Toy Story movies and Sergeant Hobo 678 in Invader Zim. He also was the sadistic Drill Instructor in the movie, “Full Metal Jacket” -Jail Warden (“The Inmates of Summer”)

Tim Conway- He is an American comedian and actor, primarily known for his roles in sitcoms, films and television. Conway is best-known for his role as the inept second-in-command officer, Ensign Charles Parker, to Lt. Commander Quinton McHale (played by Ernest Borgnine), in the popular 1960s WWII sitcom McHale’s Navy, and for co-starring alongside Carol Burnett on The Carol Burnett Show– He is Mermaid Mans Sidekick, Barnacle Boy.

Tiny Tim-he was an American singer, ukulele player, and musical archivist. He was most famous for his rendition of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” sung in a distinctive high falsetto/vibrato voice (though other performances reveal a broader vocal range). He was generally regarded as a novelty act, though his records indicate his wide knowledge of American songs. He had no official middle name, though some web sites report it to be “Butros”, his father’s first name, while during his televised wedding his middle name was given as “Buckingham”. He died of a heart attack on November 30, 1996. His headstone reads “Khaury, Herbert B”-Singing voice behind Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight (“Help Wanted”)

Which brings us to an Icon of Hollywood:

Ernest Borgnine. He played Mermaid Man. Spongebob’s hero and Barnacle Boys Mentor. The first time I heard the voice of Mermaid Man, I thought to myself that it sounded familiar. It wasn’t until the credits I saw it was Ernest Borgnine.

My first memory of him was in “McHales Navy”. He was Captain Binghamptons nemesis and leader to a ragtag band of misfits who crewed the PT 73. “McHales Navy” was one of the RARE sitcoms I would watch for it was funny without insulting your intelligence. Yes, it was far fetched they kept a Japanese pilot a secret from the Captain and it was a stretch the Captain was as clueless as he was. Yet, it worked and that was all that mattered.

Many actors we, of the Baby Boom are familiar with, are dying off. George Burns, to me, was the first God and he pulled it off (“Oh God” and “Oh, God, You Devil”) Yes, Morgan Freeman makes a good God, but George Burns smoked a cigar and played magic tricks with cards. Andy Griffin to many was a small town Sheriff and later a folksy Lawyer. Richard Dawson was a game show host and starred in “Running Man”. Dick Clark, the Worlds Oldest Teenager.

My world began to change when Mel Brooks, the man of a thousand voices, died. If he died, then no one was immortal. My favourite characters were now silent and whomever did the voice overs could not come close.

We now have a new generation of celebrities. Something about them is not quite the caliber of those who came before. They redid “The Three Stooges” into a movie and the length of time it stayed on the screen tells me it was not very good. No one could ever compare to Moe, Larry, Curley and Shemp.

Now, Mermaid Man has lost his voice. Barnacle Boy no longer has someone he can call an “Old Coot” or observe “You can’t remember what you had for breakfast”. Spongebob and Patrick have lost their hero and we have lost Commander Quintin McHale, U.S.N.

Fair Skies and Following Seas, Sir.

While I am not a fan of Sponge Bob, neither do I have anything against him. I grew up with McHales’ Navy and even was aboard the PT73 on a Universal Set in CA. That was good family television. He will be missed.
