Chess Master Garry Kasparov Arrested At Pussy Riot Protest
Garry Kasparov, the former world champion chess player, was arrested outside a courthouse in Moscow yesterday for protesting the sentence handed down to Russian punk group Pussy Riot.
Kasparov’s Facebook page indicates the 50-year-old was also beaten by police. The Facebook update reads: “We just spoke to Garry on the phone. He is at the police station. He was beaten but says he is okay. He isn’t sure what will happen next. It seems the police are waiting for orders from above.”
Three members of the female punk collective, Pussy Riot, were found guilty of hooliganism and sentenced to 2 years in prison. The trio have already spent six months behind bars and under Russian law could have been facing a five year term.
In February this year, four members of Pussy Riot staged a performance in front of the iconostasis of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, motivated by their opposition to Vladimir Putin and the politics of the Russian Orthodox Church. Their performance was interrupted by church security officials. On March 3, after the video of the performance appeared online, three of the group members were arrested and charged with hooliganism aimed at inciting religious hatred. Hooliganism must be a Russian word for dissent.
