Jim Lehrer Debate’s Biggest Loser
(Newser) – The Denver debate wasn’t President Obama’s finest moment, but many pundits say there was a bigger loser: PBS’ Jim Lehrer. The 78-year-old moderator struggled to enforce time limits and seemed to let the candidates—especially Mitt Romney—take control, Politico reports.
Fox’s Chris Wallace accused Lehrer of failing to control the debate and of asking questions that helped Obama, while MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said, “I thought the moderator did not moderate.” The “Poor Jim” tag trended on Twitter soon after the debate began and a “Silent Jim Lehrer” account gained thousands of followers, New York reports.
After the debate, an Obama spokeswoman suggested Lehrer had failed to control Romney. “I sometimes wondered if we even needed a moderator because we had Mitt Romney,” she said. “We should rethink that for the next debate.” A Romney adviser fired back, “You know you’ve lost the debate when you start blaming the moderator for a poor performance.” This was the 12th presidential debate Lehrer has moderated, but moderators have increasingly come under attack; days earlier, he said he was outraged by suggestions that he was an uninspired choice.

One other thing looking at it this morning. I couldn’t bear to watch with my friends last night, after just minutes of seeing Robme smirk and lick his lips, so I watched Johnny Depp instead. Anyhoo, in watching a few clips this morning, something came immediately to mind that many people just will not like at all, because it has happened to them all too often these days. Remember when he said PBS needs to have the funds cut to make a dent in the debt, yeah all of about .0001% of a dent. Well, he looked at the man who was moderating this debate a PBS employee, and basically smirked at him while telling him.. yeah dude, I am going to cut your job off, so sorry ’bout that. This will not help cement Robme’s image as that guy who feels your pain imo. Just another way to look at the whole debate thing. What can I say, I’m trying to find little nuggets of silver in the clouds this morning so I don’t go on freeper sites and let loose.
I don’t want to blame the moderator but he did not do his job. Went he tried to shut down an answer and move on he and let Romney talk over him.
I think there comes a time in everyone’s life when they need to put their coat on the rack and leave it there. Jim needs to hang up his coat now.
