CIA Director David Petraeus Quits Over Adulterous Affair

Read Time:1 Minute, 31 Second

CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from his post, admitting he had an extra-marital affair.

In a statement, Mr Petraeus said he had submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama, and that he had shown “extremely poor judgement”.

He described his behavior as “unacceptable” for the leader of the nation’s main intelligence agency.

Mr Petraeus became CIA boss in 2011 after heading international forces in Iraq, then in Afghanistan.

He was the highest-profile military officer of the post-9/11 years, winning plaudits for his role running the “surge” in Iraq and implementing a counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan.

‘Great patriot’

Mr Petraeus’ resignation came just three days after President Barack Obama’s re-election, and prompted a flurry of statements from the White House, intelligence community and Mr Petraeus himself.

Announcing his decision to stand down, the former general was full of contrition.

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extra-marital affair,” Mr Petraeus said in a statement.

“Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organisation such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation.”

Mr Obama’s statement said Mr Petraeus had “provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades”, citing both his time as CIA director and service to the military.

“By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger.”

“Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work.”

I’m not saying it’s okay, but there’s something bothering me here. It’s not like this thing went on for any length of time and he just doesn’t seem to be the type who runs around doing the horizontal rumba with any attractive chick who comes down the pike. He also seems way too smart to risk tossing his very impressive career overboard just for a roll in the sack. I don’t blame his wife for being pissed, but I do have problems with people saying “if she weren’t so fat, blah, blah. blah.”
WTF?

This goes to show what I’ve always said. The most powerful force in the universe isn’t electromagnetic force or nuclear fusion or gravity. It’s the vagina. Been the ruin of many a good man and made bad men worse.

On the whole though, yeah. It’s worth all the fuss. Thanks ladies.

Good pint, Joe. I’ve always thought it was human stupidity. But I guess there are worse things to be stupid about.

It’s a damn good thing that you are “anonymous”….otherwise your mother would probably come beat the crap out of you for saying such an asinine thing. When women “get fat, dumpy, and sad looking” it’s usually because they are working their asses off trying to create a home for their families, do MOST of the work and upkeep for that home, and most likely hold down a job on top of it. Women are strong, but no one could do all of that and still manage to look like a Victoria’s Secret model…and if we’re just judging on looks, “Pet” is no Brad Pitt himself. (I also notice that there’s no photo of YOU so we can give your appearance a once-over…)

I can only assume that you are 1) a troll just trying to see how many irate women you can incite to call you names, or 2) a complete moron. Either way you are apparently a pretty sorry example of a human being. I would nominate you for a Darwin Award (and see if I could figure out how to help you get one) if I were sure that you haven’t procreated at this point.

One thing that we ALL need to remember is that when something like this happens, there are real people whose lives are shattered. Whatever made the General betray his wife, his children, and his country, his wife’s appearance has nothing to do with it. It’s just a sad, pathetic situation…and you can bet most people who read your comments thought, “What an asshole…”

I agree with you about everything. Especially with the “appearance has nothing to do with it” statement. One of the wisest things I have seen was, “No matter how beautiful a woman is, somewhere there’s a man that’s tired of her bullshit.” What the person that wrote that didn’t mention is the reverse is also true.

Chose your mate wisely, in the end, there are far more important qualities than appearance.

When women get fat, dumpy, and sad looking men want to look for someone else.

Did ya see Pet’s old lady Holly? What? Of course he looked in other places. Poor bastard who would want to wake up next to that Holly in the morning? Guaranteed the TV audience saw those comparisons and thought “lucky guy.” Fuck the job.

This has nothing to do with fucking marriage, and everything to do with embarrassing the nation, and more importantly being open to compromise by enemy agents. The KGB may be dead but believe me will still have enemies. Iran anyone? One of the easiest ways to co-opt the enemy is to learn secrets about his leaders. The general recognized that and did the right thing. It doesn’t have a fucking thing to do with the sanctity of marriage, or any of that bullshit, although if you compare the general’s wife with his girl friend I can get it. I really can. Be real.

When the USa stops being obsessed with the sex lives of people, it will be ready to join the group of mature, rational nations.

If the affair has endangered national security, that would be different. But apparently, it did not.

National security is always endangered when someone in a position of trust and responsibility is susceptible to blackmail by foreign agencies as a result of their own indiscretions. Beyond that I don’t much care what people do on their own time.

You have a point but they are subject to blackmail because of the unhealthy obsession with other people’s sex lives. In a more enlightened society, no one would care.

I think you miss the point Mr Smith. I agree that this country is way over obsessed with the sex issues, however, in this case General Petraeus was married for 38 years a position of trust in and of itself which he violated. He was also the keeper of the secrets of of national security which is also a position of significant trust. The violation of trust becomes an issue wouldn’t you agree within the logic of trust issues?

No, I would not. Perhaps you have not heard of “open marriages?” I am not privy to the details of their marriage nor do I care to be.

From his remarks, many might assume that theirs is not an open relationship, or he might have only been saying the politically correct thing.

If the truth were really known, few military marriages with long separations are truly monogamous. There is often an unspoken “Don’t ask, don’t tell” agreement. In fact, DADT is a good policy for any marriage. It isn’t a matter of keeping secrets, it’s a matter of hurting someone else unnecessarily. After all, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

You are such an idiot Mr. Smith. As you said you are not privy to their marital status so your point is therefor moot. The CIA answers to the President and to the Legislative branches of this country. Thus, it is up to them as to whether or not his behavior is appropriate.
