Petraeus Always Knew Benghazi Incident Was Terrorist Attack
What did the general know and when did he know it? Well, according to what he told Congress in a closed door meeting earlier today he suspected the Benghazi incident was a terrorist attack at the outset. He also claimed that official documents were tampered with following the original reporting.
(Newser) David Petraeus believed from day one that the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was a terrorist attack, he told lawmakers at a much-hyped closed-door hearing today, according to lawmakers in attendance. Petraeus said that the CIA talking points written immediately after the incident referred to it as a terrorist attack, but that other federal agencies altered them, lawmakers tell the AP. “He was definitely fully aware of what was going on,” Rep. Peter King says.
He also confirmed that after the incident he “went to Tripoli and interviewed many of the people involved,” Diane Feinstein said. Petraeus was secreted into the Capitol today through underground tunnels to spare him a scandal-driven media onslaught. His remarks never touched on the sex scandal swirling around him. When asked if the scandal would affect his testimony, Petraeus assured legislators it wouldn’t, and, according to King, he seemed unfazed by the week’s events.

I may be in the minority here but I am not all that comfortable with the “new” all of congress and the public have to know everything our intelligence people know and when they know it 24/7 news stuff. I understand that we have congressional oversight with the intelligence committees of the house and the senate and it is their job to investigate these things and report out when the investigation is complete. But this he said, she said, they said, crap needs to stop. The same is true for the Patraeus mess. When they are done with it, and wrong doing is determined then report it. Until then let’s not make fools of ourselves before the entire world and also give everyone insight into how we do our intelligence business. Right now John McCain, as much as I respect his service to our country, needs to be ashamed of himself, as does Lindsey Graham. There is little doubt in my mind that this entire mess is interfering with efforts to find and prosecute (spelled kill) the people that launched this attack and killed our people.
Bill, I agree. Even worse, the record of congress “leaking” information they know very well is, and should be, classified is abominable.
I understand civilian oversight of military operations. To do otherwise is to lead to an unrestrained military and covert organizations.
That said, if you or I leaked secret information, we would be prosecuted. Think about the fury directed against Julian Assange and Bradly Manning. Why should congress be exempt when they do it?
The word was “suspected” That’s hardly a surprise. Anyone that has not been asleep for the last 20 years would think the same ting, “This is possibly a terrorist attack.” It was hardly a great leap of intuition on the part of Petraeus.
