Brand New Storm Dumps a Foot of Snow on New England

Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

While the republicans and other less educated refuse to accept the truth, part of the climate change dynamic calls for shorter, harsher winters, and in New England the good folk are sure feeling it, as Mother Nature decides to come calling once again in the form of snow, lots of it.

Weather watchers say up to a foot of snow fell in parts of southern New England as the latest winter storm moved through the Northeast. The storm had ended in the region by this morning and dry weather was expected for days, although strong winds may chill the bone. A National Weather Service meteorologist in Taunton, Mass., said six to 12 inches of snow fell from yesterday afternoon and overnight in Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut, and eastern Massachusetts, including Foxborough where the New England Patriots play. Many residents lost power after wet snow piled up on power lines.

I love snow, especially when I don’t have to get out and drive to work in it. Unfortunately, living in the Heart of Darkness (South Georgia) pretty much guarantees no snow…. 🙁

I was chatting with a friend in Quebec last week and was being told about the snow that was blowing horizontally there.

I mentioned that we were going to have less than 4 cm of snow here, too. After expressions of disbelief, I had to admit it was about 4 cm less that we were expecting. 😀

Guys. Everybody knows that when it comes to Liberals, I make Che Guevara look like John Boehner. But nonetheless, I’ve lived in New England for many years, and have borne the onus of many of our Winters. Snow is to New England what tea is to Brits. Believe me, a foot of snow in December is nothing worth writing home about.

Of all the nonsense coming from the Right James, this one gets under my skin more than anything. I can’t even blame the Jesus Jumpers, because some of the most evangelical of evangelical preachers are using their bully pulpits to urge pols to do something about the changing climate.

I wonder, exactly what do they think politicians can do? In most cases, by the time politicians do anything, it’s either too late or the problem is already over.

James, from the building of the Pyramids to the Moon Landing, history is an indicator of what can be accomplished by a single minded society when motivated by great leaders. For better or for worse. The politicians could do something about global climate change. We’ve been on them for decades. In fact, the Environmental Movement dates back to our founding as a nation. It’s a matter of prioritization. As long as people can profit from the destruction of the planet, you’re never going to see any worthwhile change.

Our politicians need to stop being politicians so to speak, and start being leaders. When they can motivate this entire massive society, change will occur.

Excellent points, bitcodavid. I guess it’s been so long that we’ve had a politician that has chosen to be a leader, that I’ve forgotten what that’s like.

You are also right about the profiteering from ecological destruction. Many years ago, I heard Robert Blake on the Tonight Show (Johnny Carson was still host) say, “If you wonder why something is the way it is, find out who is making money from it being that way.” I don;t know if that was original with Blake or if he was quoting someone else, but it has stuck with me so well, it became one of my Universal Truths.

A problem with politicians stopping being politicians is that they only have one rule, “Get (re)elected.” Everything they think, do, and say must pass that one filter. That means voting with the moneyed interests that paid for them to be elected.

It always amuses me when climate change deniers leap upon anything, no matter how ludicrous to “prove” it is not getting warmer. Even though the short, severe winters have long been predicted as being part of the climate change.

I always ask them, “Are you saying the glaciers and ice packs are not melting? Do you claim the sea levels are not rising? Do you deny that the average global temperature is not increasing”

Admittedly, the complete causes of climate change are not really known and that human intervention is not likely to be responsible for all of it, the facts clearly demonstrate that things are changing. What the end result will be is uncertain. But dislike and denial are not proof that it is not happening.
