Mitch McConnell not as dumb as he looks

Read Time:1 Minute, 59 Second

President Obama just told us that a deal avoiding the fiscal cliff is near. It looks like Senator McConnell was getting nowhere with Senator Reid so McConnell called in Vice President Biden for help. A major concession given from all this was taking the tax hikes which President Obama called for on those making $250,000 a year and raising that level to $400,000 a year.

Senator Tom Harkin (D Iowa) is outraged. I too am kind of outraged but not surprised, given that President Obama’s history is one of appeasement to get a deal. In this case there was no reason to appease but apparently he’s appeasing. And the tables will be turned if it’s democrats who block this deal instead of republicans.

To the republicans all I can say is well played.

I have to admit I woefully underestimated the intelligence and skill of Mitch McConnell. He never struck me as a genius politician as the majority of voters in his state would vote for Hitler rather than a democrat. Just put an R behind your name and rant about taxes and freedom and you win. Look at Rand Paul.

Yet, McConnell showed patience. He won. The rich will win. Despite republican calls for cutting spending, sequestration will be put off thus protecting defense contractors. But of course programs the poor and middle class rely on such as college tuition tax breaks will be slashed.

In essence, McConnell took the pile of crap that is the republican economic platform and crafted a chocolate cake. A tasty one if you own shares of General Dynamics. Obama had to give nothing and we may have had a few paychecks of higher tax rates, but in a month Obama would have gotten everything he wanted and Mitch and the republicans would have been sent a message that Obama doesn’t play games now. Instead, the message is that you can wait out the President. Not good for democrats or America.

Karl Rove is patiently biding his time. He’ll be back in 2014. Mitch McConnell showed him that’s all he has to do. Wait and the pigeon will come to you.

Obama and I are from Illinois. Politics ain’t fun and games, at least when it comes to dealing with the other side. The phrase we live by is “cut their nuts off.” This is best done unsubtley.

Obama is cutting them with a scalpal. After the lies republicans told and bullshit they resort to. Look what they did to Max Cleland. Swift boating John Kerry. Look what they did to one of their own, John McCain. They deserve the meat cleaver.

Joe, this was a pissing contest and the president won but he just could piss as far as he wanted to. The big point here was for Obama to make Republicans vote for a tax increase and that he may get. Now exactly what the prize for this is is yet to be determined. The next side of this will be the spending cuts and that is where the rubber will really hit the road in about two months. Make no mistake, there will be some cuts and adjustments in entitlement programs along with some cuts in defense. The question will be whether the Republicans will try to for immediate cuts which will hurt the economy or will they phase them in weighted toward the end of the ten year cycle to give the economy a chance to continue to grow.

I gotta concede the oligarch thing to you Les. The few bucks I send Obama or the DNC don’t amount to spit inthe ocean. I hope you’re correct about the republicans not benefitting. If I have to eat crow from this post I will do so gladly.

I never wanted the tax cut to begin with Dale. I’ve been calling for the jump over the fiscal cliff since they started calling it the fiscal cliff.

I wonder if this increases my liberal cred? Demanding my taxes go up along with the oligarchs Les despises.

Mitch is no dummy that’s for sure Joe. But I’m not sure that long term the rEpublicans won much. After all isn’t it the Oligarchs controlling the show? Regardless who is President or which party controls the purse strings? The drama will continue. Change occurs when the oligarchs give the nod.

I’m not sure what happened yet Joe, because not much has happened, although it looks like Obama may have caved again. After all, when it’s all said and done, he has kept tax cuts for 98% of the people. Bush tax cuts which destroyed our economy and increased the deficit.
