It feeds some steel workers I guess. I think there are more churches in the USA than Christians
I agree Brian. I live in S. Georgia and I counted 12 churches on a one mile stretch.
Thank you Marsha Woerner.
James: Marsha’s comments are correct. While Hesed House is primarily supported by various religious denominations, that is not the only source of their funding. People donate money, food, their time, clothing, etc. to this organization and a few affiliated groups.
If you read the information at the linked web site, Hesed House is considered to be a national model for ending homelessness. It was founded by Christians solely for the purpose of helping people. I am not shilling for them, but I am a big fan, and a supporter – this is just a bunch of good people doing good things for others, just as Christ has taught us.
So, as I said, this is Really the way Christians feed the poor.
I regret that you see religion as evil, because in truth, religion is not evil. Some people do evil things, but religion in and of itself is only good. And many, many of the nicest, best people in the world are very religious.
As has been said elsewhere, Good people will do good things, evil people will do evil things. For good people to do evil things takes religion.
I stand my my comment that religion, despite having done some good things has for more bad things on its ledger. I do know some very good people who are religions. I also note that they are exceptions.
You might also note that Hesed house is a more secular organization. Doesn’t it seem odd that, for good religious people to do something like this, they had to turn to a non-religious format?
James, although I agree with you in general, the particular inattution indcated, Hesed House, is the antithesis of your complaint. It actually IS an organization that works on feeding the poor and giving them a hand up with NO strings attached. It is an equal opportunity group with no underlying sex or religion associated. I’ve donated to them (and I probably will again this year) although, as several of you know, I am Jewish and feel great ties the Jewish people and organizations formation HOWEVER, I have great respect for a group that strives to heap PEOPLE be the best THEY can, not to fit into SOMEONE ELSE’S defined mold!
Then it really is not a religious organization. Either way, it is good to hear.
Locally, we have been helping a place that has taken in children for daycare while their low-income parents worked. About a year or so ago, they finally qualified for government help and have a new facility two doors away from us. Now they take in paying clients as well. They still have a lot of non-paying people, though. Fortunately, the government aid and the paying clientele fully support them so we are turning to a different place that also takes in underprivileged children for a head start in school.
We both believe that they best way to help is to prepare children for a better life. That’s why we focus on day care and educational places.
The truth is, this is Really the way Christians feed the poor.

And we do it much more efficiently and effectively than the Government.
Just one of the thousands of points of Light that G.H.W. Bush talked about.
For “evidence” you use the web site of the organization for whom you’re shilling. Whenever a religious organization does anything for anyone it is always with the proselyting string attached.
Even though in rare cases any religion does something for the general good, it it far out shadowed by the evil they do by always attempting to impose their beliefs on others. They do this by threats and by attempting to pass their beliefs into laws for everyone.
If your beliefs were based upon anything but myths and lies, it might be forgivable. But that is never the case. Instead of building glass and stone palaces “for the greater glory of god” those resources would be far better used in actually providing education and healthcare without the proselyting string. But noooooooooo.
I was returning from Arizona a few years ago and saw the world’s biggest cross from the highway. My awe was tempered with the exact thought you had MadMike. WTF good is that thing? If somebody is pathetic enough to embrace Christ because he saw a big cross is that really the kind of person I want next to me at church? On the same note, if a parish is freaking so pathetic and self righteous they have to advertise their Christianity with a giant cross, which is in reality a giant middle finger waved at anyone who doesn’t buy into whatever bullshit they believe, I don’t want any of those assholes in the pew next to me.
On the other hand, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is as cool as it gets. Fuck you non Catholics and atheist mother fuckers! Bwahahahaha…
Joe in Kentucky there is a similar cross that overlooks a strip club. The Christians were trying to make a point. The strip club parking lot is invariably packed with cars, and some of them bear the “fish” the Christian symbol. As to the Sistine Chapel, it is as “cool as it gets.” So there 🙂
Thank God for hot strippers? Sounds like as good a point as any.
Just another case of ignoring anything that is not convenient. Like, “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
James, I guess the vast majority of political GOP ers are going to their imaginary hell. Man it’s tough living in reality; that’s why they invented religion. Religion=everlasting life and $$$$$$$$ according to the xian Taliban.
