Joan Rivers to Anti-Defamation League: shut the f*ck up

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

I enjoy good comedy, but sometimes comedy can get in the way of respect, although that conclusion is in the eye of the beholder, as in the case of comediennes like Joan Rivers, who is known for her biting, satirical snark.  The latest brouhaha deals with a holocaust joke, and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), never a good combination under any circumstances, but this time I have to side with Joan.  Here’s the story summary:

(Newser) Joan Rivers managed to get herself on the Anti-Defamation League’s bad side … with a butt joke. Speaking about how Heidi Klum looked in her Oscars dress, Rivers noted on her show Monday: “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.” Her E! co-hosts looked a bit uncomfortable, the New York Daily News reports. The ADL was quick to call the joke “vulgar and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors, and indeed to all Americans,” adding, “Of all people, Joan Rivers should know better.”

Perhaps the ADL should have done their research before they let their collective asses overload their collective mouths.

Rivers wouldn’t apologize: “My husband lost the majority of his family at Auschwitz, and I can assure you that I have always made it a point to remind people of the Holocaust through humor,” was her response. It’s decidedly nicer than her last response to the ADL: When the organization got angry at her for comparing Costco to Nazi Germany, Rivers told the ADL to “shut the [bleep] up.”

I used to find her funny but after seeing her live show in London last year I think she’s old hat. Personally I don’t find the Heidi Klum ‘joke’ funny from any viewpoint.

I don’t know Cherry. When you get to her age you have kissed all the butts you have to and you can let your hair down. I watch her TV special and she was a cross between Don Rickles and Richard Prior in their latter days, with a little George Carlin thrown in for good measure. Just sit back and enjoy and get your butt off your shoulders.

That’s one of the advantages of age. You get to state your mind and don’t care a bit what people think. Yes, it can be annoying, but there is often truth in it. Dislike doesn’t equate to untrue. I dislike being reminded that I am bald, but it’s still true, 😀

You tell ’em Joan. This lady long ago paid her dues and need pay respect to no one. Good for you Joan.

Joan has always been edgy, to put it mildly. She hasn’t mellowed with age. Good for her.
