Why the next pope is important even to atheists
You don’t have to be Catholic to appreciate a progressive, youthful, modern pope, as church doctrine can often be the shot heard around the world. The cardinals will be meeting shortly to determine who will head the church in place of Pope Benedict, who is stepping down after reading a rumored horrific report of corruption and sexual promiscuity reaching to the highest levels of ‘Holy Mother the Church.’
The influence of religion on global society, and more immediately American society, cannot be emphasized enough. It is a dangerous practice which threatens the rights of women to choose, people to marry who they wish, and whether or not you wish to practice birth control. It is also the root of hypocrisy, bigotry, hatred and prejudice. This won’t change anytime soon, but a progressive leader of the world’s largest religion could be a step in the right direction.
You don’t have to believe in the invisible talking sky dweller to appreciate the politics of those who claim they do. The Catholics have a lot of money, and they spend it freely to help elect people who support and represent their agenda, so another creaky traditionalist like Benedict, or worse his predecessor, would be little more than a continuance of the same tired policies, with little hope for women to have a more active role in the church, priests to be allowed to marry, a common sense approach to contraception, abortion and gay marriage, as well as vigorous prosecution of those clergy who molest the children under their care.

The heading in the email announcing this post read “From Whence Comes The New Pope“. I am glad to see that was not repeated on the blog page, because, Mike, you committed a pleonasm. “Whence” means “from where”, so saying “from whence” is the equivalent of saying “from from where”. It’s like saying “free gift” or “ATM machine”.
When it comes to language, pleonasms are among my pet peeves, right up there with unnecessary apostrophe’s.
I hate those darn pleonasms E.A. Thanks, as always, for the minders. By the way from whence comes your knowledge 🙂 🙂
I am happy to see that I was not the only one who noticed this, although the actual term “Pleonasm” is new to me, although I see that you’ve linked it to the Wikipedia page. Time to learn…
Now that I’ve read a lot about pleonasms, I can confidently say that I would not have pointed out that it’s a pleonasm, I would simply have said that it’s redundant. But thank you for the link for “pleonasm”
From time to time these things get through the editing process, and in this case it was my post that did so. I did, however, catch it on review, thus the headline change. Keep on keeping me straight guys 🙂
I have the idea that the next pope will be more about damage control. Why should they even consider truth, common decency, or even practicality? They never have in the past.
The Vatican is heavily slanted toward Italians and those are ones that have been so involved in supporting the falsehoods of the RCC all of their lives, they have no concept of reality.
James you are so right. They are entrenched in corruption and still live in the Dark Ages. I think their ‘bible’ is the one written by Pope Alexander VI, the second, unflinchingly corrupt Borgia.
The crazy catholics are convinced they are at the top of the food chain when it comes to Jesus and his friends. They’ve no intention of moving forward. I suspect they’ll elect someone who will move backwards.
The church hierarchy is stacked to the ceiling with ancient, tradition bound leaders, who are beholding to outside influences and lobbies, much like politicians. The odds of electing someone under the age of 70, with a modern view, are slim to none. It will be more of the same until someone finally wakes up.
