California girl mauled to death by sanctuary lion

Lions are wild animals, and no amount of training, caging, or nurturing is going to change that.  While generally safe at zoos and other facilities designed to care for, and protect their charges the animals are always at risk when humans are involved.  An important part of animal care is understanding, literally, the nature of the beast, meaning follow the rules and give them their space.

It’s never a good idea to venture into a predator’s territory, and sadly, this is apparently what happened in the case of Dianna Hanson, an intern at a California big cat sanctuary, who was mauled to death by a lion yesterday.

Hanson, who had only been an intern since January, was one of two volunteers at the 93 acre park.  At feeding time, about noon yesterday, she was attacked and killed by a male lion known as Couscous.  Unfortunately, deputies were forced to kill the lion so as to get him off of Hanson.

Why this happened is a puzzle and sanctuary officials don’t understand why Hanson, who is supposed to be separated from the cats at all times, was in the actual animal enclosure, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Police say the other volunteer attempted to coax the lion, a 4-year-old male named Cous Cous, away from Hanson. The facility has been in operation for 20 years and has generally received good grades from inspectors, notes the AP.

I watched the news on this so called ‘mauling’ last night. She was NOT mauled. She suffocated. They had an interview with the dad and there was not a mark on her and no blood. Her neck was broken and no skin was pierced. It seems to me like she was playing with the lion and all 350 lbs. of it rolled over on her and she couldn’t get him off. They don’t know exactly what happened, but it certainly wasn’t a mauling. Instead of shooting the poor thing which was raised from a kitten (they showed videos), they could have used a little more critical thinking skills as to how her death occurred before shooting the magnificent beast. Now, whether we hear more facts and ideas as to what happened will depend on the investigation. MAULING, Indeed !

Blame the cat for doing what big cats do and shoot it, that’s the ticket. Nope, no sympathy from me for an idiot that goes into a place a wild animal is being kept caged. My will to live among other humans is being sucked out of me daily, really it is, at how very stupid some of us are.

This is very sad, for both girl and lion. What in the world was she doing in that enclosure?
