Instant replay: Obama threatens to cut social security, blah, blah, blah

Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

I’ll be glad to see the back of Barack.  Once the picture of hope, this president has caved time and again to republicans, and this time it’s a big concession indeed.  President Barack Obama, a democrat, is proposing substantial cuts to social security and other benefit programs just so he can make nice with the republicans, again.

His insistence on more taxes for the wealthy has become his great white whale, and Obama is no fan of whales.  Like Captain Ahab, in his quest for Moby Dick, Obama is prepared to sacrifice the little people to get to the big people by compromising, AGAIN, on the Fiscal 2014 budget on the Fiscal 2014 budget by combining the president’s demand for higher taxes with GOP insistence on reductions in entitlement programs.

A key feature of the plan Obama now is submitting for the federal budget year beginning Oct. 1 is a revised inflation adjustment called “chained CPI.” This new formula would effectively curb annual increases in a broad swath of government programs, but would have its biggest impact on Social Security. By encompassing Obama’s offer to Boehner, R-Ohio, the plan will also include reductions in Medicare spending, much of it by targeting payments to health care providers and drug companies.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest here’s what Wilbur of the Daily Kos has to say about it:

Twice a year Obama threatens to cut Social Security through the chained CPI.  Twice a year liberals (me included) start screaming,  “Omigod, Omigod, Omigod, Obama a Democrat is cutting Social Security.”  Twice a year Republicans refuse Obama’s bargain on Social Security.  And twice a year we move on to some other issue.  Has it occurred to anybody that maybe Obama is making fools of us all?  Obama knows the Republicans aren’t going to accept his deal.  The Republicans know they aren’t going to accept his deal.   We know the Republicans aren’t going to accept his deal.  The media know the Republicans aren’t going to accept his deal.  Obama knows the Republicans know that they aren’t going to accept his deal.  We know that Obama knows the Republicans know they aren’t going to accept his deal.  The media knows that we know that Obama knows that the Republicans know that Obama knows that the Republicans aren’t going to accept his deal.  Obama knows that the media knows that we know that Obama knows that the Republicans know that Obama knows that they aren’t going to accept his deal.  At this point I am tired of this god damned road show of the Princess Bride.  Let’s go start another land war in Asia and be done with it.

Mike, sometime back I wrote a post that this particular form of government has proven to be pretty much a failure. These last years have proven that to be true when a minority of a minority can hold the entire country and economy hostage. I am beginning to think we may be better off with a parliamentary form of government.

parliamentary government was excellent until we suddenly ended up with ‘career politicians’. Our politicians used to be ‘ordinary’ people who entered politics after holding down a job and understanding real life.

Parliamentary government is indeed good – but ‘career politicians’ must be banned. Then it works as well as any system.

I agree. That’s why I proposed only one term f 6 years in any elected or appointed government positi9on and then that person my never hold any government job again – ever. No retirement, no special benefits, no re-elections, just go back to work as the founding fathers intended.

I vote for JESS!!!! Well? I can!!! Empress of the World covers Blighty!!!

I am, as always, slightly confused and perplexed though.

Doesn’t Obama have to cater for the other place – I don’t know!! You’ve got The Senate and The House of Representatives and isn’t one of them more Republican or something?

Like most Brits I’m not altogether clear but, somewhat like ‘Call Me Dave’ Cameron over here having to kow tow to The Liberal Democrats sharing power, doesn’t Obama have to dodge about a bit ’cause of the other lot in the other house? – or something.

Anyroad. I quite like the chap. It seems to me he’s spent 1 term in office with at least one arm tied behind his back and no change second term – I think – er possibly.

I do apologise. I am trying to fathom it all out. Honest!!!

Kabuki at the expense of the American people. I wish I was empress of the world, things would get done way differently with me in charge.

I don’t think this will happen, but what if the Republicans call his bluff?

They might do that, but when it came time to do the voting, do you seriously think they would pass it?

They all know that any politician that votes to cut social security will never be elected to anything, ever again. While committing political suicide is common, it is usually done by making a public statement so abysmally stupid that even Faux News must disown you. Just ask Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, or even Mitt Romney.
