Paying for prejudice: California to make Boy Scouts pay for homophobic stance

Read Time:1 Minute, 3 Second

Those homophobic Boy Scout bosses may have to pay for denying membership to openly gay members, at least if California has anything to say about it.  Yesterday the state’s Senate Governance and Finance Committee passed a bill revoking tax-exempt status from any nonprofit that discriminates based on sexual orientation, gender, or religious affiliation, the LA Times reports.

The bill’s sponsors are the first to admit that the measure is aimed specifically at the Boy Scouts.  Its author calls them the “most egregious violator” of state anti-discrimination laws.

The anti-homophobia bill cleared committee with only Democrats voting in favor. Some Republicans objected that the bill could hit other organizations, like church-affiliated groups or boys’ and girls’ sports leagues, though the bill’s authors say that wouldn’t happen. If the bill does pass the full legislature, it’ll almost certainly face a legal battle. “You are talking about taxing revenue that is very important to the local Scout troop,” a Boy Scouts of America official testified yesterday, adding that the organization is “re-navigating” its don’t ask, don’t tell policy.

In this day and age, it’s hard to understand why an organization, any organization, would deliberately discriminate based on sexual preferences.  Now California is going to make them pay for their prejudice.

Look. If you join an organisation that wears a uniform and short trousers then you are asking for it.

Now The Girl Guides is quite another story 😉

er…not now obviously!!! Back then when I was young!!!

I think I’ll be quiet now…

As I am reading this, it could lead up to some other groups being targeted. At long last, maybe here in the land of fruits and nuts, we can get the churches paying their share. hey I can have a dream can’t I?

I think it is time that discrimination of any kind be abolished from any non profit organization. Let’s face it, if a non profit group is given a tax break and they discriminate then, in effect everyone in the country are supporting discrimination. This should include churches also. I remember recently a church in Mississippi refused to marry a mixed race couple who were members of the church. At that moment they should have lost their tax exempt status.

I’m not homophobic but I have mixed emotions about this. Would girls be allowed to join? No. For obvious reasons. Gay boys? Looking for feedback on this as I’m a little ashamed about feeling apprehensive for my 11 year old boy scout.

How do you feel Chelsea? Are you worried that gay boys may want to experiment with those who are willing?

I have some news for you. For many decades, at least 6,Boy Scout camp outs have been hotspots of sexual experimentation among the campers. It seems to have done no harm unless the scoutmasters were taking advantage of the campers. That’s been going on for as long as there has been scouting.

The very second a person says I am not (insert whatever here) and adds a but to it, you can guarantee some bigoted bullshit is going to come out they mouth. You don’t disappoint in that regard with “I am not homophobic but..”.
Why would they allow girls in the BSA anyway, the girls have their own group. As far as gay boys, they are all around you, you just don’t know who they are maybe. Not like they are targeting Chelsea’s boy coz they are gay, that is the right wing
putting that crap in the wind and seeing if low info people get askeered of “teh gheyz” who are out to get our chilluns. Be afwaid, be VEWY VEWY afwaid.

You know there is homosexuality in about 400+ species and homophobia only in one.

Yes they do James! Those preachers are always playing politics from the pulpits. Freakin’ religion needs to be taxed like every other business, because that’s all it is: a business.

Maybe this could crack the door for taxing religions. They do discriminate and do so regularly and heavily.
